D&D General Should players be aware of their own high and low rolls?

Honestly I don’t understand the insistence some people have that any way other than their own is against the rules.

I think their obsession with metagaming sounds boring, and sucks some fun out of the game, but it’s not against the rules (nor is it in the rules) so it’s totally valid as long as they all buy into it.

If they want to reciprocate and say our way of playing is not fun for them, fine. But, man, this crazy obsession with calling it “cheating” is just f%#€ing weird.

If the DM has stated that metagaming is not allowed or should, at least be kept to a minimum then the players should abide by that as part of the social contract of the game. It doesn't matter what you label it, if metagaming is discouraged do your best to avoid it.

Yeah nobody is arguing with that.

Same thing if the table rule is that everybody has to speak in Monty Python accents. It doesn’t matter if it’s in the books or not; if you can’t abide by table rules, find a different table.

I would advise being very specific about what you mean, but that’s up to you.

Every session 0, I state that players have to pay me $5 to spend Inspiration.

Since I told them about it and I'm the DM, it is not unreasonable and they're the jerks for saying no.
okay all joking aside back in 2e I ran into a guy that used to offer at the end of every game bonus XP for out of game money, and would if the table (or even just 1 person it counts for the table) bought his lunch during the game everyone got bonus xp%...
a few years later a friend (still a player in my games) was running 3e and gave out 'bonus' xp he had a not safe for enworld words for it... but basicly if you did something funny or got a lucky crit and everyone cheered or if you figured something out you got a little check on his notes by your name... he then would multiply the current levelx100 xthe number of checkmarks and give you that as a bonus xp... BUT he was always broke and so when people would buy him lunch or dinner he would give them 3 or 4 extra checks, so one day a guy just said "If I give you 20 bucks can I get 20 free checks" and he said yes... ugh dark days

Not ‘acting on assumptions of how the roll went’ but ‘acting on assumptions based off how the roll went/acting on the numerical results rather than the described consequences‘
Also 'acting on the knowledge that there was a roll made at all', if the standard is not to ask for a roll unless there's a reason.
You’re trying to sneak across a courtyard, you get a 3 but the DM describes you as a shadow on the wind: suppose the guards didn’t notice you but a manservant looking out the window did,
If you had known you got a 3 and you heard that ‘shadow on the wind’ description you could immediately spot the discrepancy and would probably try taking out the guards or abandoning the attempt, they might also continue but the player they’re going to be on high alert all on information they and the character doesn’t/shouldn’t have.
Exactly.
