If I recall correctly Second Wind appeared in the Sept 2013 playtest package and then it was quickly changed to temp hit points due to negative feedback.

Changing it to temp hit points (at the end of the playtest) pacified many and prevented SW from being a huge issue on the forums at the time. It didn't get the chance to evolve into it's own temp forum like the DoaM issue did.

After the bitter fights over surges in 4e, if they can't realize that some people want old fashioned hit points and old fashioned recovery then they are lost. Honestly. Insane or evil or stupid, take your pick. I say "evil" in a "for bad reasons" way not as in "Hitler".

I do recall those fights and right now I don't see much difference between that and powers like Hit Dice & SW.

I don't agree that it was an attempt to end a previously supported play-style, but I do understand his frustration.

Unless Mearls is completely unaware that there are many D&D fans who don't like inspirational healing, it's rather hard to imagine how it wasn't a deliberate action.
You know what? No.

If I listed out all the stuff that I don't like in 5e, we'd be here for a while. So no, I'm not content to just say "eh whatever" whenever some piddly little rule happens to be in the game that upsets oldschool sensibilities because I know, sure as hell, that my newschool sensibilities haven't been catered to at all.

I'm sick of the moaning and griping from the oldschool crowd. The designers have been molding the entire damn game to appeal to an older-school playstyle, with throwbacks to vancian casting, boring fighters, rolled stats, etc. But no. That's not enough. It's purist, it's dogmatic, and it reminds me of my 2-year-old.

I don't even think it's about the game at all anymore. It's about wanting to be right and whining on message boards.

To try to be diplomatic (yea me...that's funny) and assume I am trying not to insult anyone... the pizza anology is what works best...

I like chesse pizza, or cheese and peporoni pizza, or cheese peporioni and bacon, or a general meat lovers... but I do not like sausage pizza or even just bacon pizza...

My girlfriend likes everything I like and then some her favorite is peppers and onions and some times mush rooms.

We can get an all cheese half peporoni and half peppers and onions...

my best friend hates meat anywhere on his pizza, so if the three of us are haning out we get a half cheese half peper and mush room, and a small cheese peporoni and bacon...

my best friend's girlfriend has an allergy to pork...(My god I feel so sorry for someone allergic to bacon) and as such has to request her pizza special made no where near it... and we just get cheese...

I'm not sure there's an old school crowd to appeal to. There's a lot of different strains in the OSR. Though a lot of people are appealing to the One-True-Old-School-Way as if their preferences are the only way D&D has ever been or should ever have been.

That certainly isn't a fair response when everyone agree SW will be the default and the only question whether WotC will support alternatives.
The bristling at a request for options smacks more of "One-True-Way" than a request to have an optional alternate.

You just identified two playstyles; New school and Old school. Let's face it, there have been
rage quitters from both camps

The only valid complaint with 5e is that it's not as modular as it could have been. In fact, that's the core issue that most of these complaint threads boil down to. For that reason, I'm very disappointed that the designers of 5e couldn't at least attempt to provide options for both playstyles.

We have to accept that both camps ARE purists and ARE very dogmatic, they are not going to change their playstyle. If WotC wants to sell to them they can't just provide half-hearted measures. There must be modules that fully encapsulate both schools of play.
