Silly Monsters

I don't know about whether or not the giff would be better if divorced from Spelljammer and guns. I mean, I like 'em that way- it gives them flavor (silly flavor, but not as bad as, say, the Giant Space Hamster of Ill Omen). And if you take away that, what are you left with? A bunch of big unruly warrior-types with more muscle than common sense. So... orcs, then?

The giff are good in my book. I'd probably never use them, and can see why some people don't like them, but I like them all the same.

Demiurge out.

And I say, regardless of whether or not they can topple empires, FR's phaerimm look like windsocks. No question.

Demiurge out.

The phaerimm blow incredibly hard. I remember reading through the early hints about the phaerimm pre-Anauroch splatbook and had it built up in my head that they would look incredibly badass and scary. You know the destroyers of Netheril, the creators of Anauroch, the hidden masters of Myth Drannor, and what do we get? Windsocks with four hands. Those f***ers have too much going for them in the metaplot.

the Miniature Giant Space Hampster is my favorite rediclous monster.

on the subject of giffs - I always pictured them as something of being british hunters. I could easily see a giff expidition to a distant sphere where they hunt local critters, and have tea time and what not.

"oh, jolly good show there old chap, shoot that whats-its good" *adjusts monocle and sips some tea*

speaking of Hampster, Giant Space and the mention that dragons will breed with anything, I should work a Fiendish Half-dragon Giant Space Hampster Lich into a game sometime and see how quickly I get tossed out the window :D

Here here! Go for the eyes!!!

Flumps are good, and G-Cubes are cool because you always know they're around when the DM comments that you notice "how clean the tunnels are in this part of the complex".

I'm also partial to Gibberlings, and more spesificly "Mutated Gibberlings" from Balder's Gate... (You can tell they're mutated because they're out in the day, and as we all know, Gibberlings are nocturnal.)

Cloakers make me laugh because the last time we faced some, the DM tried to MAKE minis for them... He used tacky puddy for the bace, and stuck a toothpick in that. Then he took card stock that was a shiny black on one side and white on the other, cut into a tombstone like shape, and drew an angry little face on the white side near the rounded end... There was a small squad of these things and the leader was much larger then the rest...

They were serously kicking our asses, but they were so CUTE, it was hard to be angry.

At some point, we left off calling them "Cloakers" and started calling them "Tie Fighters".

I nominate the Berbalang.

Idiotic creature. Active only on the 3 days of the full moon, otherwise it's found totally asleep, astrally projecting itself thousands of miles away on the astral plane, and takes 1d100 rounds to try to come back before it gets easily killed... and it only has 3 HD and bad AC.

What's the point?

So, imagine how shocked I was when going through the Dictionary of Imaginary Places....and came across a reference to this critter?!?

Gricks do seem useable to me, but the one time I did use one, the party wasted it pretty quickly, which disappointed me.

There were two grick encounters in some caverns I recently put my PCs through. The encounter information is in this thread. The caverns were leading up to a Lovecraftian ruined city, where -- among other things -- the PCs encountered a grell. They enjoyed it.

Lots of the really silly monsters are based off of real myth. Its really odd what some cultures find frightening.

It speaks well of the creators of the game if this is all we had to say on the subject. I thought this thread would end up the size of the World's Biggest Dungeon.
