Silly Monsters

My vote has to go to the Ubue, three armed, three legged humanoids with three heads, one of one sex two of the other. These legendary beast came from the original version of the Palace of the Silver Princess, The one that was pulled before it was released. I think the same module also had the dreaded bubbles also. Honorable mention to Giff, Yak Men, Tortles and Snappers. I also remember the Stwingers I think they had a related creature in the listing as well.

on the subject of giffs - I always pictured them as something of being british hunters. I could easily see a giff expidition to a distant sphere where they hunt local critters, and have tea time and what not.

"oh, jolly good show there old chap, shoot that whats-its good" *adjusts monocle and sips some tea*
That's always how I pictured them. And every time would would say 'hmm' or 'hmph', instead take a deep breath and make a throaty whuffing noise that comes mostly out your nose, sort of like a horse. They fit right in to the naval/militaristic aspect of Spelljammer.

speaking of Hampster, Giant Space and the mention that dragons will breed with anything, I should work a Fiendish Half-dragon Giant Space Hampster Lich into a game sometime and see how quickly I get tossed out the window :D
Probably not as fast as the gnomes who invented the phase shift doppleganger lernian giant space hamster, or whatever it was
:p

Hmmm.... I was always partial to campestri myself. Tiny singing, line-dancing mushrooms! That hop around and head-butt! :D

I hate them almost as much as I hate the deadly room furnishing monsters. Innocent looking floor? Wrong, it's a trapper! Well, certainly the ceiling is safe. Wrong, it's a lurker above! Ooh, a chest! Wrong, it's a mimic! God, those were stupid monsters.
In that same vein, I'm surprised no one has mentioned deadly cave furnishing monsters like ropers and piercers.

Well, compared to a lurker above or a mimic, the piercer is downright logical. After all, creatures that bear a natural resemblance to rocks aren't uncommon in real life. The roper, on the other hand, I think is a little silly. But that's mostly because I first saw them in the 2e Monstrous Manual, where it looked like Slimer from Ghostbusters, only with tentacles.

Demiurge out.

The D&D (non-Tolkien) orc blows pretty hard. I can't bring myself to ever use the green skinned, pig snouted, jutting lower jaw, tusked, Return of the Jedi gits again.

The long nosed troll is pretty silly.

Spectres/wraiths/ghosts have always been problematic when trying to describe how they look different.

Yak folk (or any half human/half animal).

Does anyone remember those silly little things that you stuck onto the dashboard of your cars back in the early 1980's? They were little yarn fuzzballs around an inch in diameter with two stick-on eyes and a large felt base shaped like two feet. Well one of my semi-insane players game me one and challenged me to introduce it as a new monster - so the "Fuzzy" was born. It hatched out of a giant plastic easter egg and was then adopted by the party's macho fighter. Great fun.

The Yikaria are great! My first reaction when I saw was that they were stupid, but upon actually reading it ...! Definately yoinkable for space operatic games, though I admit it might be appropriate to change the physical description in such a case.
Space opera Yikiaria? Ok, I don't really see it myself, but the Yikiaria make a pretty good villain race. At least, I always thought so.

I remember this creature from the 2e Fiend Folio. I believe it was called a "stwinger" or something like that. It was basically a naked little female pixie/sprite fey creature that would swing on a dwarves beard and put them to sleep. Read that again. :\

And second me for the tojanida. WTF is that supposed to be? Has anybody ever even used one? They left the zaratan out for this piece of s*** monster?
I think the tojanida is in there because of symmetry - it's the water equivalent of the arrowhawk, salamander and xorn.
