D&D 5E Simple Suggestion to improve champion fighter.

I propose the Champion should get OA boosts far better than the other fighter subclasses. It gives him a feel closer to older D&D edition fighters while keeping him "simple". It gives him a role that he is the best at filling which helps further differentiate him from Battle Master and Eldritch Knight. The champion would become the stickiest fighter there is!

I propose that at level 3 he additionally gets +proficiency bonus to damage for OA attacks . At level 7 or 10 he could additionally get the ability to make 2 OA's a turn. This may not be enough to close the gap with the other fighter subclasses but it at least carves out a niche for the champion which makes him interesting even if not necessarily optimal.

Reactions aren't exactly the simplest thing in the initiative system, and superior OAs fit the feel/concept of the BM better than the Champion.

Give it a go.

But I don't think it's needed. My next character is gonna be a Champion, without this fix. You'd just be giving me a little gift if you were my DM.

If by 2 AOs you mean that he can potentially hit 2 different creatures that try to move away from him then I think that it's way too rare to be meaningful (unless you intentionally do it all the time). If you mean that he gets to attack one creature twice, then that's a really beefy AO and I like it.

It got me thinking that if you want the Champion to have the beefiest AO and be Reaction Attack master, Then have his AO use his Extra Attack, so that at 5th lvl his AO hits twice, at 11th lvl 3 attacks, and at 20th lvl 4 attacks.

My idea for a simple solution would be to give the Champion the Barbs Retaliation really early, like 3rd lvl or 7th the latest.

I really think the Deep Stalker Ranger's Stalker's Flurry feature would be a great fit for the Champion. I'm not sure what level I would grant it though.

I also think the Champion should have more ways to gain advantage or impose disadvantage. It makes sense as they're supposed to be the CHAMPION Fighter. I would also be tempted to give them a way to eek out just a little bit more damage from their attacks. I guess that is what the improved crits provide though.

I like the AoO boost but AoOs are so rare in games that I play unless they're from Sentinel, it wouldn't see much use. It also makes the already awesome Sentinel feat even more awesomer :)
