Six From Gate Pass - A War of the Burning Sky Campaign (3.5)

Alric attempts to catch a few glances at the trailing party without breaking his stride too much.

OOC: Alric shares the information about the gate garrison with the rest of the party

OOC: Alric is attempting to discern the numbers of the party shadowing them and see if he recognizes any of them.

Lars says, "Keep going, fellas. I will follow them." At the first opportunity Lars ducks into an alley to get out of sight of the group following them.

[sblock]Once out of sight, Lars casts Disguise Self and assumes the guise of a thick matron with a dirty apron out in the alley to throw out some garbage. Assuming the guards don't figure out what happened, Lars will start trailing them. (One 1st level spell cast, 4 left for the day.)[/sblock]

The group continues on after Lars' exit and then Torrent tells you to stop and looks behind the party: "The guard is following us? What in Istishia's name for?!"

The four guards shadowing you see that you've stopped and stride towards your party. One calls out: "Attention! We have reason to believe that you may have spell casters in your party and we are ordered to bring you in for questioning. Drop your weapons and come with us."

Four more guards step out from a nearby alley and take up positions on the other side of you.

"What is going on here?!" says Torrent, "We've done nothing wrong."

The few other people on the street disperse down alleys or step back into their homes or shops.

[sblock="what Alric sees"]Alric, after taking a moment to inspect the guards, you notice that a number of things are off. Primarily, their uniforms do not fit correctly and some are not wearing things properly (i.e. badges in the wrong place). Its painfully clear to you that these men are imposters. [/sblock]

GM: Lars, lets assume you're disguised and behind the group that was trailing the party. They aren't focused on you.

"Torrent, these men have no intention of treating us lawfully, have been given no such orders and to acquiesce to them would be dangerous."

Turning to the band of thugs before him Alric draws his sword and walks slowly towards the man who issued the order putting himself between them and the party. He then addresses the man with an eye of cold steel and edge to his voice that belies years of military service.

"You know me?" He cuts the man off before he can answer. "You should. Not just because I have worked for the guard, but because you should know the true gravity of the choice I'm giving you: drop your weapons and march to the guardhouse where I will put you up for charges of impersonating Gate Pass officers, flee, or I end you here!" Alric speaks the last option allowing the emphasis of each word to sink into the man.

OOC: Alric is obviously trying to intimidate the man. Hopefully intimidate him enough to surrender and come with him to the guardhouse to be turned in. If not, hopefully they retreat. But apparently he's as intimidating as a kitten...

The 'guard' smiles at Alric's attempted intimidation: "Jig is up is it?" he laughs, "surrender should I? You're as scary as a kitten. Well since you know we're not guards, why don't we just move things along eh?"

The speaker draws a short sword from his scabbard and calls out: "Oy, alright men, just like Merv told us. We want the elves, the dwarf and that pretty little blonde. Kill the rest!"

Street Ambush!

GM: The 'guards' are wearing uniforms over scale mail and have light wooden shields. Those that move to engage Arnir, Hrimr, Torrent and Kirio have drawn saps while the others have drawn short swords.

Lars you seem to blend into the other civilians who are leaving the area, and as far as you're concerned, the guards are only paying attention to the party. In fact, the party doesn't even know you're there. In their minds, you dashed down an alley and haven't been seen since.

Don't forget that the enemy are all 'flat footed' (no dex to armor; can't make AOOs) against you until they act (which is last). Lars, don't forget that this means you can sneak attack with a ranged weapon (within 30 ft) or with a melee weapon without having to flank them.

The triangles on the map indicate "difficult terrain." Its really icy on those specific cobblestones so movement on those squares costs double. Also, running or charging through them requires an Acrobatics check vs. DC 20. Failure by 4 or less means the character cannot run or charge, but can act normally. Failure by 5 or more means the character falls prone.

OOC: Daaaaaamn, I didn't get notifications of these updates. I'm just going to resolve the thing between Arnir and I now, pretend this happened back in the workshop

"Gyrahh! You son of a #$*%!"

Bannock lunges at Arnir, hurling bits of scum from the bag.

OOC: Let's just say a fracas ensues, I try to stick the bag on his head, hurl him around the room, etc, then we're broken up by the rest of the level headed group and we return to a state of uneasy truce, and the result is that Arnir has further cemented Bannock's loathing of him. Bannock spent the rest of the time doing what he could to clean his pack, but it still smells quite badly, and since departing the workshop, he's been purposely trying to walk very close to Arnir.

Alric wastes no time having readied himself for combat and eagerly strides forth to put his money where his mouth wasn't.

OOC: Alric moves to H8 and attacks the thug in H7.

A smile comes over Bannock face, as he realizes he'll finally get to do something that interests him. In an instant he has his glaive in a combat grip, and moves into position as the rear guard of the group.

"There's no way these men are guards of the city, I've never seen a single one of them before in my life! With me, Torrent!"

From a position in front of Torrent, the long blade of the glaive sunders the air in a deadly sideways arc.

Cleaving clean through the torso of the first thug, the mighty right-handed swing follows through....

OOC: Bannock steps into I-16, activates power attack, and attacks the imposter guard in H-18

Alric, your fumbling sword swing clips harmlessly off the impostor's shield.

Bannock, your glaive connects with your target's shoulder and shears armor, flesh and bone. The blade carves its way into the middle of the poor thug's torso, splitting him in two. Mangled bloody meat collapses and steams in a heap. The force from your attack continues through the target but fails to strike another opponent.
