Size of gaming group?

What's the average size of your gaming group? We play a weekly game with 1 DM and 8 players. It gets a little out of hand because the characters have a lot of differing goals and personalities. When one group/individual is doing what they want, the rest fidget or goof around. It makes it hard to get things done, and to have any kind of group goal or motivation.

Does anyone else have problems like this, or what would you recommend to help solve it?

we play once a week and have 6 players and a DM,we get about 1-2 rooms done every week because some of our players are very immature and talk out of character more than they talk in character, we dont even substsitute the exploring for roleplaying, there is even less of that than there is of the fighting/exploring.

sometimes i get really annoyed with this group and feel like quitting, but then i remember that i couldnt possibly quit d&d because of 1 person who ruins the whole group.

We have 6 players plus the DM and play weekly, or actually about 3 times per month. Six works well for us, especially since more often than not someone is missing. We still have enough players to generate ideas and few enopugh to keep involved.

Are there alot of little toys or knick-knacks on the table? Is there stuff in the room that takes their mind off the game?

We had this problem too. The host of the game often had all his minis sitting on the table while we tried to play, and people kept picking them up, fidgiting with them, fondling them, etc....we were more focused when we cleared the table.

I suspect the average D&D player is an imaginative, smart person who also happens to be obsessive/compulsive and suffers from Attention Deficit Disorder. Pass out some ritalin at your next game.:p

We to have 8 (when everyone shows) it gets to ya... they're my friends and all, but man we never get ANYTHING done.

I prefer no more than 4 players.

The Sunday night game I play in goes every two weeks and has anywhere from 4-8 players depending on the turnout. It's really fun:)

The weekly game runs on Monday (and is currently Planescape), and has 5 players. It's equally fun, but we get more done becasue there a fewer people.

In our group we have three players and a DM. We'd like one more player so the DM can quit having to play the lame party healer that no one else seems to want to play. If you live in San Angelo, e-mail me! Wait, unless you are already in my group, then don't.

I've only got one, but that is deliberate. First we have two newbies learning 3E at the same time, so it simplifies things. And secondly, I'm very selective about the kinds of things I want in a player, so I'm going with people I already know. We're both content with the current situation.

I play in two groups of six, and DM a group of three, soon to be six, then five.

I prefer to play in a group of 3-4, and DM 3-5.
