Sleep. Sleep! SLEEP!

And... any way you slice it, sleep is a nearly worthless spell. It might be an appropriate encounter power, but there is no way any sane person is going to pick it for a daily spell. From what I saw while running KotS, sleep may be tame enough for an at-will power. Slow is one of the weakest conditions after the first round of combat. That first round is the only thing that warrants sleep as an encounter power.

I dunno... KotS spoilers:

[sblock]In my KotS run, it took the gnome out completely in the dragon burial site fight. In the kobold lair, it effectively rendered the wyrmpriest useless thanks to some clever maneuvering by the pcs.[/sblock]

I thought sleep was pretty darn good, personally.

it's a first level spell that slows everyone in a area 2 burst (thats a decent area). And puts half of them into Coup De Grace land. so auto crits+sneak attack doesn't seem like a bad spell. Better then a slightly better magic missile. It also, unlike 3.5 sleep, doesn't stop being effective.

I'd just like to say that, without spoiling anything, Sleep absolutely saved a party's butt in Encounter A3 of KotS. Not the slow part, so much, but really bad saving throws on the parts of the baddies allowed the PCs to concentrate their fire on the boss for 3 rounds straight.

So what I want to know is, what happens if you cast sleep on a bunch of hobgoblins, and they use their hobgoblin resilience power. If they fail that immediate save, do they immediately fall asleep?

I had exactly the same thought, and question. I guess It'd be a question of whether or not they really want to take that save *now* and maybe never get a turn, or take the slowed movement.

Depends. What is the exact wording on Sleep?

The other thing about sleep is you have to use it tactically in order to get the benefits of the slow.

Have your party fall back and pelt with ranged attacks while the enemy can't catch up. Better yet, if some remain slowed or unconscious and others recover it may split the group into two. The slowed condition can be painful if you enlarge the battlefield with your movements.

Thats the way we played it when i ran raiders of oakhurst.

Cheers

Hit: The target is slowed (save ends). If the target fails its first
saving throw against this power, the target becomes
unconscious (save ends).
Miss: The target is slowed (save ends).

So... The hobgoblin who fails his bonus save is unconscious!

Good use of a enemy power against itself in my opinion! ;-)
