[Slightly OT] What to do if you're invited into a group?

Nightfall

Sage of the Scarred Lands
Okay folks, your ole pal, the Sage has been invited into a local gaming group not far from his home. Now I've never met or heard of these people. So I come in an unwashed being, (most likely a player) Now while I'd like to say more, I am curious about what I should do. I mean should I prepare to be a player or perhaps, in my slightly off handed way, convince them to let me run? ;)

Understand folks, what little I do know comes from only one source, (the one who invited me) who also feels like he wants to start a new group (a few of the present players are less than serious and apparently the DM isn't doing much to handle the situation) Now I don't want to rock the book...but on the other hand my SL instincts are kicking...So should I just play it cool, or go hardcore and take over?

Go in cool. That's what I did. It took me 8 months but I finally get to run a game. 8 months I was invited into a game and I knew no one. So, I just played it easy to get to know them. I think it's easier to do that as a Player. DMing for complete strangers is not easy becasue the trust is not there.

Now if you get there and they are talking about a game but have nothing concrete and no DM, then suggest you run SL and see what they say. Good luck!!

Thanks Crothy. I appreciate the vote of confidence. (Thinks then I'd better pack my copies of R&Rs and CCs and the SLCS along with my core stuff.) Not going to waste my time with anything else.

Play it cool!

If you dont know anything about them, see if they are fun to hang out with first:D

You can always go hardcore later, but you might actually like playing :)

Play it cool, get to know the people and their playing style(s). mayde you and the one who invited you can inject the seriousness the game needs as players. Or maybe in time the game might come to a point where there is an opening for a restart with a new DM and you can move in and teach them the ways of Scarred Lands.

But to just show up and announce a takeover will most likely end badly if not handled with the utmost tact and diplomacy.

Anywho good luck with the new group. (Now I needs to find me one).

My wallet is a little light for beer buying...

But thanks to everyone else's suggestion. I think I will play it cool. (Especially since my ranks in Diplomacy and tact are pretty low. ;) )
