Smallville 10-13 SPOILERS

I'm not keen on the power-transferral thing. Clark has his powers because he's an alien. But his powers seem to be able to be taken away, given back, given to other people, etc. all with the wave of a hand. It's almost as though his powers were magical in origin, and controlled by Jor El.
Well, at least there's a "technological" tie-in for each instance - Jonathon and Lionel from the crystals inside the cave (tho we didn't know about the crystals yet for Jonathon) and within the Fortress of Solitude for Clark (and a couple of "freak" losses of power for Clark, but those seem to be Kryptonite related)

So it's not completely a hand wave... More like Jor-El applying/removing super-advanced sunblock on his son :)

We've seen him do really long jumps before though.
That's true, but he's always had a running start in those cases, the distances covered weren't anywhere as far and Clark didn't seem to have a whole lot of control or even certainty that he'd could make it. I think those were just feats of athleticism as compared to a genuine super-power.

This jump, a standing long jump about a half mile straight up, is in a whole different class IMHO. The other jumps also didn't have those nifty ripple special-effects either. I think that since they're going to be doing more stories based in Metropolis this season (a much more vertical landscape than rural smallville) I expect we're going to see Clark literally leaping over tall buildings to save the day rather than just running around super fast. It'll be a nice change of pace I think. :)

I know, it's sci-fi, but it doesn't sit well with me.

In Superman 2 his powers are taken away and he's made mortal, a human. I think in this specific instance the series was borrowing from that idea. That using Kryptonian technology, Clark can be made into a human, and thus bereft of the benefit that he receives from Kryptonian biology.

Thus far in Smallville i dont think they've ever linked the sun with Clarks powers either.

Other instances of his power being removed involved being struck by lightning, which I think also happened in Luis and Clark.

Well, his powers have only been taken away less than a half dozen times. This is all over 5 years, so it happens very infrequently at best. There may well be a more sinister element to his powers being taken away that we have yet to see. Seems to me they finally have a overall plot this year versus a ep by ep approach.

His powers were transferred due to lightning and kryptonite (happened twice I beleive)

His powers were taken away just now and given back by Jor El

There was the episode where the powers went wacky becasue of solar flares

When else has it happened? That's not a wave of the hand at all.

Crothian said it already, but in the episode with Perry White, we learn that Solar Flares have an impact on Clark. Pete and he theorize that the Sun must be where Clark gets his powers... So they've at least touched on it for those of us that know the mythology.

I agree that the HUGE standing jump is different and I too hope we see more of it -- I like the ground ripple effect they do when Clark launches himself.

The other effect I've really enjoyed is the new superspeed (well, new in season 4) -- where you get the red ripples of Clark rather than the blured images. I'm glad they're still using it.

Originally the producers said "No flights, no tights!" and said maybe Clark might fly in the last episode of the show. They are apparently moving away from that. I'm totally loving this show. I wish they would follow Clark into adulthood.

Good. Then maybe they can get away from the boring teen angst and freaks of the week.
