The Perils of Snake Hunting

Funny that I just found this article today! It's a great piece that really demonstrates the instinctive reactions people have to snakes.

"Vietnam had so many species of poisonous snakes that they were tongue-in-cheek nicknamed by the potency of their venom. I didn't think of them as dangerous reptiles but the living embodiment of slithering evil. Their bites not only killed but caused a central-nervous-system-paralyzing, muscle-seizing, mouth-foaming, body-shaking, hallucination-filled, agonizing death. Somewhere in the undergrowth were steel-gray cobras, agile black mambas, and banana-shaped kraits, deadliest of all "one steppers.” Snakes were easy to find, even inside our perimeter since our refuse attracted rats and they in turn attracted snakes."
