SNL - D&D skit

So what was the gist of the skit?

A commercial for a theme-based chat line (sex line?) targeted at geeks. The first theme/segment was for D&Ders, the second for SW fans, then ST fans, then LotR fans. Although they didn't use all of the jargon correctly, it wasn't bad. Jokes like that usually go over the best when they are well-researched and the target has nothing they can say about it than, "They've got our number with that one." When the target can poke holes in the details, satire loses some of its punch. I'd say it was a near-miss in this case.

I didn't watch SNL last night (I was working on my D&D campaign! ;)) but I figure that if I can handle them constantly making fun of me for my political beliefs then I'm certainly not going to start being offended about this.

I don't watch that show, but by chance I saw the skit.

I could easily throw a girl into a football helmet and have her rattle off jargon like nickel defense, first down, onside kick, completions, and so on. She would sound just as ridiculous as the ones in the skit.

The same could be done for any professional sport easily, and probably many other popular pastimes.

The difference is one has been designated as cool and one has not. That is the only difference; neither is superior. I stopped caring about societal designations like that a long time ago. I grew up and started thinking for myself.

Some adults, including the makers of the skit, are still mentally trapped in high school. THATS embarrasing.

I'm thinking at least a few of the writers of that skit are gamers. Its hard to write about something you know nothing about.

Jimmy Fallon has used iconic music from the computer game EverQuest in his Weekend Update skit before.

Any of you guys recall Lothar of the Hill People? It was a late 80s-early 90s SNL skit about D&D geeks.

Although I never saw it, I believe that featured Mike Meyers (sp?) who is a (ex-)gamer.

On the Uber Goober DVD there's another skit - a clip, I think, from SNL - with Mike Meyers as the quiz master where one of contestants is asked a question about D&D.
