SNL - D&D skit

I don't watch SNL very often--mostly for lack of TV--but I would have to say that Tina Fey has topped my old favorite Weekend update correspondent Dennis Miller who had topped my other fav Chevy Chase who I felt was just better than Norm Macdonald and Bill Murray...I never liked Kevin Nealon or Colin Quinn. Oh, Dan Aykroyd(sp?) and Jane Curtain were pretty damn good...but they didn't have that certain style that seems to be needed to own the update chairs.

Not that this adds to the thread...its just not very often I get to talk about old SNL...or new.

I missed this, I really like it when people poke fun, at d&d as long as it's not vicious. If you can't laugh at yourself...

My favorite SNL'er has to be Will Ferral he is just funny, I can look at him and laugh and laugh, right now I have to go with Darrel Hammond and yes I too think Tina Fey is a cutie.

Does anyone remember the 70's show where "Booger from Revenge of the Nerds" and Alice Cooper are sitting around playing at the end of the show. Good Times

A commercial for a theme-based chat line (sex line?) targeted at geeks. The first theme/segment was for D&Ders, the second for SW fans, then ST fans, then LotR fans. Although they didn't use all of the jargon correctly, it wasn't bad. Jokes like that usually go over the best when they are well-researched and the target has nothing they can say about it than, "They've got our number with that one." When the target can poke holes in the details, satire loses some of its punch. I'd say it was a near-miss in this case.
I caught that SNL skit late when I was channel surfing, so I missed the scene with D&D but have seen from Trek on. Personally, I got nothing more than a chuckle out of it. But it wasn't offensive. This is tame compared to Jay Leno's monologue featuring D&D topics. About as tame as the Star Wars fantasy scene* in the hit sitcom, Friends.

*Who wouldn't want to see Jennifer Aniston in a Leia's slave costume? *drools* :p

The only big "mistake" in the D&D section was the last line when she talks about "casting a saving throw." Everything else could work. Up until that point, I thought one of the writers might have been a D&D player (indeed, maybe that was changed during editing).

Don't forget Lovitz & Hooks.

Oh god, how could I? Actually I think I was looking at the cast circa 1990, and I'm not sure that both of them were on the show anymore then. But they were both very talented. Lovitz has done pretty well for himself. Its too bad Jan Hooks didn't get a better post-SNL career.

Since that crew left, There've only been two real gems, Ferrell and Farley. And I guess David Spade. Everything else has been dog excrement.

I'm not even a big fan of the three of them. I do think the new cast has a lot more potential than the previous one. At least they don't annoy me right out of the gate like Wil Ferrel and Anna Gasteyer did.

In 100% agreement. And Miller was the best at the Weekend Update.

Agreed, but Tina Fey is right up there with him.

"casting a saving throw."

I'm not sure of the context because I never saw the episode but 'cast' can refer to 'casting the die'...or to throw the dice. Like I said I'm not sure 'cause I never saw the skit...just a possibility. There has been a long line of D&D references throughout the show over the years.

Here is that section of the skit:

"What's that baby? You're a level 5, chaotic evil half-orc? Oh, it makes me so hot.

<Giggle> I'm a lawful neutral druidic monk, with +5 melee range, boots of levitation, and a big sharp vorpal sword.

I want you to cast a saving throw baby! Roll your twelve-sided-die and cast it! Cast it!"

See - this just looks like it certainly wasn't written by a nerd. People with a passing familiarity of D&D would write better stuff. After a single session, anyone not willfully ignorant knows that the d20 is king...
