The tabletop RPG not only has to justify its existence vs. just mining the Dragon Age fluff for use in a D&D-powered game, it has to justify its existence vs. its CRPG alter ego; if the TRPG version cannot accomplish both tasks, then the game will be a waste of time and money, which means that the user network required to make any TRPG commercially viable won't be maintained (and that is if it's established at all) and therefore make the product a very pretty doorstop. The marketers have their work cut out for them.
I know nothing of Dragon Age, but imagine if you could use the CRPG as a Character Builder, and play tangent adventures to the CRPG's main storyline? What if you could, through gameplay, "unlock" eletronic copies of adventures for tabletop play?

Speaking of Dark Sun: Did anyone ever play the old TSR DARK SUN video game? I think SSI released it in the early 90's. That game was awesome. Only problem is the game bugged out for me on the LAST battle of the game so I never got to complete the story.

It's Dark Sun: Shattered Lands. I remember that when I was playing it I was also playing through Ultima VII, Part Two: Serpent Isle, another awesome - and awesomely long - game. Fond memories.

This creates so many questions...

How will the game be developed? Will Green Ronin help create the actual system or will they simply compy the stuff from the computer game Bioware makes?

Will this draw more people into Tabletop RPGs? How many people who play only computer RPGs will try the Tabletop version? Will the box set include both the game books and the computer game?

IMO, the main advantage of this game will be setting. Bioware games always had interesting setting, and you always want more after finishing game. This could bring in a lot of players. I expect it will be better than FR 4e (or 3e), and on par (or even better) than Eberron.

Who knows, perhaps this will grow into major competition for D&D.

Nothing about it is really that innovative.

Well, nothing in any game coming out since the last decade or so is that innovative. ;)

It's a great background for sci-fi roleplaying. Does it need to be more?

You could do Mass Effect with little effort in D6, Star Wars Saga (since, mechanically, Mass Effect is Knights of the Old Republic), GURPS, Spycraft 2.0, BESM/Tri-Stat, Fuzion, and probably a few others. With a little more work you could use SilCore, Traveller, Basic Roleplaying, and others.

Yep, but that way someone else will do the work with all the background. :D

I also voted "Unimpressed". Groking the DA home page, all that I get is that this game is another take on the Fable franchise - what you do in the game directly affects your character (likely including physical appearance) and ultimately the ending of the game which will vary, based on your in/action with events in the game world.

Bioware is an excellent software development company, and I blame Atari for the buggy interface of NWN2 to the point that it became unplayable for me.

Unfortunately, I have no idea what dragon age is. And bioware's site doesnt seem to tell me much about it.

It be nice to have some backstory on the game....

C'mon, Pramas, spill it! What are the mechanics like? :D

It's frustrating that so little is known about the ttrpg- I am going to have to wait for more info to pass judgement, obviously. But what little we know - boxed set, easy to learn, tied to a major video game release - gives me hope. This could be one of those rare opportunities to really grow our hobby, and that's what excites me the most.

Bioware.

Did.

Not.

Make.

NWN2.

Congrats, my head is now separating from my body and becoming a creature made of pure spite and vengance.

I'm a little interested. I hope they are successful and that it brings in a bunch of players. I do think the license is a big deal, even if the video game is a flop, it's already been a big deal.
