So how long have YOU been playing D&D?

don't remember when i got my first set, but i do remember my best friend and i playing in the library during our lunch hours in grade seven, at age twelve.

we were quite the oddity for gamers- all girls. it wasn't until i reached high school that we found out that boys liked to play the game, too!

I started playin in 1981 with the second edition of the Basic Set. The game was prescribed to me by a child psychiatrist.

really?! i know its personal but, if you dont mind , could you say why? the reasons the psychiatrist gave not your personal situation. i'm sure you heard all the ho ha about dnd being bad for you in the media especially here (i'm from israel) where declaring you play can potencially hurt you in the compulsry militery service. so i'm intriged.

The DMG wasn't released until '79.

Indeed. And '78 for the PHB. So it must have been the winter of '78/'79 I started. My DM must have been running an OD&D-AD&D hybrid, which I never realised until now.

My first game was the 1994 "Dungeons and Dragons Classic Game", also known as the 17th printing of the basic set. My best friend and I played the old HeroQuest boardgame, and D&D was, for us, just a more elaborate version of it.

After that, I didn't play again until I got into 3e around 2002 with a different group of friends.

I first began playing in 1979 - I was 10 then and was introduced to the original blue boxed set with the stunning cover by Sutherland of the wizard with the torch and wand and the fighter in plate mail with the bow looking straight at a rather large red dragon on a heap of treasure.

(By the way, as a side note, Sutherland died last year in very sad circumstances.... All should lift a glass to his memory if they have not already done so.)

Anyway, I was insanely active until 1988 when I moved to the West Coast. Only played a little on and off then, but stayed abreast of the "scene" and read everything I could get my hands on. I had a friend who worked in the gaming industry (at Alderac in fact) and he would send me things for free now and again. My friends back on the East Coast also would keep me informed as to the goings on.

Still not playing much and reading a lot of the material. Haven't really been "excited" enough by the material out there to seek out others to game with to be honest, although I do like the NWN game .... But even with this I haven't got a lot of time.

Most recently I have been scribbling together a campaign in my off-hours to send to some friends of mine by request. Always takes longer than it seems, eh?

Bought myself the White Box set for my 15th birthday in June 1977.

Had to run out and get Greyhawk, the first supplement, a month later.
