Okay, so the game went yesterday and it was an absolute hoot. The ladies picked up on everything immediately, and had no trouble with the math or the basic concepts.
It just warmed my heart when halfway through I said, "Okay, the creature's terrifying appearance scares you all so much you're going to take a minus-two penalty on all your actions," and the Columbian/Quebecer girl says, "Fine, I'll up my Power Attack by two so I'm still doing the same damage. This bastard's got a low AC, anyway." Only with a French accent. Hee.
Strong support for my wife's theory that there's a market of late-twenties/early thirties folk (many of whom are women) who aren't getting enough problem-solving/intellectual stimulation in their day-to-day lives, and will jump on an opportunity to do so with both feet.
The girl playing the ranger went out and bought a fur hat to wear during the session to get "in character". For the next game she wants to get one of those life-size plush dogs as her wolf companion, Molly.
Anyway, they LOVED it and are badgering me to run another. Their boyfriends apparently are jealous.
I'm planning on writing up a Story Hour to detail the misadventures of the gang... keep yer eyes peeled!
This is a crazy DMing week for me. Barsoom on Thursday, a game at a FLGS on Saturday, stewardesses on Sunday and Barsoom again on Wednesday. Four games in seven days! Woot!
