D&D 5E So, is anyone playing 5e in Storyline Mode?

That is, playing using the PHB/DMG/MM, in the Forgotten Realms, with the factions, running either Tyranny or Elemental Evil (or will be doing so using ToD, EE, or RoD)?

I'm curious how many people are following WotC's model vs. doing their own thing.

I'm currently running two concurrent campaigns in the Silver Marches that were following the plotline of Hoard of the Dragon Queen for the most part. And one of the two groups is still following along the Hoard/Rise path as they are currently stuck on the "flying island" that is Castle Naerytar (since I merged the Castle episode with the Frost Giant flying city episode). However, several parts of Rise of Tiamat will be jettisoned as the Cult of the Dragon plot is running alongside another plot of my own invention involving the Shadovar and the upcoming 1373 Dracorage. The second group is dealing with the City of Shade side of the story.

Both groups have also been interacting with members of the five factions, although not exactly as laid out in the books. Like in almost all cases when I use modules and adventures in my campaigns... I use them as the spine of the plot and then go in whatever directions the PCs take (thereby invariably running "off-course" from the module/book.) I enjoy it that way as it allows the parties to figure out what is most important to them in their gaming, while at the same time allowing for more colorful background painting of the world as things from the modules/books occur in and around everything the party is doing.

Our group is running the adventures as is, however we are using FLAILSNAILS and DMG followed converted classes in addition to the PHB classes.

I am running Hoard of the Dragon Queen with my tabletop group, but I am expanding it in certain places. They reached Baldur's Gate and had 15 days to wait before the Cult's caravan's arrive. Having played Baldur's Gate computer game I thought it wouldbe fun to throw a side quest at the group, and so I am using Murder in Baldur's gate to make the city come to life while they wait. They are now working for the Flaming Fist mercenaries in a desperate battle against the Guild but still quite bamboozled as to what is really happening inthe city as the city starts to fall into chaos. It has been a pretty cool side trek with still plenty to go, and now I feel like I really know how Baldur's Gate works which is cool. I plan to expand events in Daggerford when they reach there as well using the Wizards of Thay. I wish I had the Adventures on the Sword Coast campaign book right now!

The FLGS where I play is struggling with keeping DMs in AL. Most eventually want to do their own campaign or suffer from burn out.

Currently another player and I are stepping into the DM's seat; while a third, incumbent DM is still around. We're struggling to figure out how to rotate DMs at the table from week to week. We'll get anything from 7-15 players on any given Wednesday.

We're playing Princes of the Apocalypse (EE)

Big bold homebrew underway here. But that's because I wanted to run something I created, rather than any sort of thumbs up/down to the official modules. The only outside product I've incorporated into the campaign so far was En5ider's Business of Emotion adventure, which our group loved.

Just started running Lost Mines of Phandelver. We are two sessions in and the players (and myself) are having a great time. I plan on expanding a couple of the locations, specifically Old Owl Well and Thundertree mostly because two players chose backgrounds for their characters that had their family coming from Thudertree. But other than that, running it strait from the books.

We've more-or-less completed the Lost Mines of Phandelver and are now moving on to my extrapolations of same. So it's all terra incognita from here! But LMoP gave us a great kickstart.

We don't fit your criteria exactly but my group ran through LMoP and we're starting HotDQ this week. We play pretty close to 5e RAW but my setting is Mystara. I'm running a big campaign with multiple characters per player in the main campaign. HotDQ will be a new group that is unrelated to the original but set in the same timeline so what they do or fail to do will affect the rest of the character.
