So sick of 2E fans bashing 3E

I've always enjoyed the time I spent playing all editions of D&D, or any other roleplaying game for that matter.

I've learned it's the friends you are with, not the ruleset, that makes it fun and worthwhile.

not any more. :D

i've thrown off the yoke that was the 2000ed and/or 3.11ed for Workgroups.

i have players for my OD&D campaign.

OD&D(1974) is the only true game. All the other editions are just poor imitations of the real thing. :D

See, you start off talking about what you play, which is cool, but then you come in with this poor imitation nonsense.

What do you judge it by? It's age? That's like saying that Atari 2600 is the only true game console out there due to its age. I'm glad you like your game and have fun but you're one of the people the start of the thread indicates.

i have played all the editions. and i can say that. i have played them. not fictiously but actually. for years in many cases. even the newest one/revised one.

i judge them based on what i enjoy.

for me the statement i make is truth.

You do realize you're talking to a Macro, right? I mean, it just randomly selects a thread and posts the same catch-phrase. It was just dumb-luck that it posted in a thread actually related to different editions, this time. ;)

He could like it due to its flexibility. All the stories by "Old Timers" I read on these boards point to the fact that OD&D (30 years ago) was probably the most flexible version of D&D ever. History points wildly different D&D games since the game itself was "bare bones."

Maybe in someways, my child analogy can't compare. It's more like the Frankenstein Monster from a different perspective. OD&D was the skeleton, and everyone else put flesh on the bones. However, it got too diverse that both AD&D and basic D&D came out from TSR, inc. to provide a common ground. Of course, I'm only looking at History since I was not even literally concieved of when D&D (1974) was released.

I'll be 30 on October 15, 2004. ;)

The old red box basic edition is the only real d&d! Everything else is a pale imitation! Including the Expert. Companion, and other box sets! Bwahahaha!

i'm not asking anyone to justify what they play.

and i will answer legitimate questions about what i play if people want to know. but i won't get into arguments about why i use rule X or Y in my edition unless you sit down at my table. nor will i banter with you about why the designers choose to change rule X from previous ed to rule X.23434

it is not just age that makes something better.

but if you truly read the start of the thread.. the first post even.. JesterPoet knows this. ;)

It's always hard for me to get involved in 2E vs. 3(.5)E debates. I think 3(.5)E has the better mechanics system, but I strongly prefer 2E for everything flavorful, since it seemed to be more involved in the worlds it supported.

I agree but sometimes I feel like playing a game of 1e/2e for a different mechanics feeling. I'm even going to try Hackmaster at GenCon.

Amen Brother Kreig, preach it! ;)

And yeah, while I don't agree with the sentiment behind it, the term "3tard" is a pretty funny jab. I enjoyed 1e, 2e, and 3e, for different reasons. 1e and 2e were simple to run, a breeze to prepare for, and were great fun, even if they weren't always logically consistent. 3e/3.5 is better for rules consistency and variety of characters, but it lacks a LOT of the flavor of 1e/2e, and its a pain in the butt to stat out NPCs for. No system is superior, they each try to accomplish different things in slightly different ways
Very well said.

I can't help but chuckle at how seriously some folks take all of this.

The bottom line for me is simple...I don't care how or what you play, and I certainly don't care about your opnion on what or how I play.
