So sick of 2E fans bashing 3E

not any more. :D

i've thrown off the yoke that was the 2000ed and/or 3.11ed for Workgroups.

i have players for my OD&D campaign.

OD&D(1974) is the only true game. All the other editions are just poor imitations of the real thing. :D

Surely you have to have figured out by now that OD&D and its suppliments were all just playtesting and buildup for the TRUE version of D&D, 1st Edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons written by E. Gary Gygax? This must have become clear over time? :p

Going on a tangent...

What I DON'T like about 3e is the proliferation of silly races and classes.

For me, it's not so much that on face because I can simply say "we don't use that here" -- which I've done extensively. We're missing a substantial chunk of the PHB from our games just to keep things focused on the character's actions and attitudes.

The problem with proliferation is, as Li Shenron suggested, that the new stuff then gets supported in every subsequent product -- which for me means that if I buy the product, then I'm paying for stuff that I've already deemed doesn't work in my campaign setting. Maybe a deluge of material is a leading indicator of flavor-dillution for some folks; for me it's a waste of money and is resulting in me not buying nearly so many books as I did back before I got reasonably satisfied with my fairly small and isolated homebrew plane of existence.

Personally I find the edition wars thing a bit silly - who cares as long as you and your group enjoy what you're doing.

Personally I started with OD&D(1974), played some 1e, though moved more into Runequest2 and Call of Cthulhu at that point, missed out entirely on 2e, and came back with 3e. On the whole I like the simple basis of D20 games, but dislike the sheer number of rules, feats, etc, but not enough to spoil my enjoyment. IMC I am pretty strict on use of things like 3rd party feats, skills, PrC, and so on to keep the feel that I want. I'd happily play OD&D again though.

But you also get D20 fans bashing other systems - BRP, GURPS, Hero, etc so it's pretty much human nature to disparage what you don't use.

"Tools, not rules." Some people don't like additional stuff, some people do. Should WotC cater to the first group of people or the larger second?

How many half dragons do there need to be?
As much as you like or don't like in YOUR group's campaign. You make it sound like everybody else should play your type of campaign. "You don't have half-dragon in your game, ergo everybody should not have half-dragon in their games."

Personally, the template is one good way of offering hybrids, and not just half-elves and half-orcs. But if you want a purebreed campaign, then that's up to you.
