So sick of 2E fans bashing 3E

Truth be told I like 1e a lot. It was so flexible in some ways (yet in others not nearly as flexible as 3e). 2e, however, was the bane of my existence, pretty much ran me out of D&D and almost caused me to never look back. 3e was a magnificient product, though.

What I DON'T like about 3e is the proliferation of silly races and classes. How many half dragons do there need to be?

People disagree about stuff. Doesn't matter what the subject is, if you get enough people, there will eventually come disagreement.

As far as popularity being a tool in determining the qualities of a system, well... I think that being open, 3rd edition has had many great applications and source book developed for it that 2nd edition couldn't touch. Occult Lore by Atlas, Grim Tales by Bad Axe Games, and a host of others, point at the ability of numerous game designers to throw out their home brew systems and come out with some innovative material that can reach a wider audience.

I know that when 3rd ed first came out, I hated it. I was so stuck in 2nd ed with all of my sourcebooks and material, that I had no desire to go 3rd ed but after playing in a few campaigns, I got the hang of it and really enjoy the system now.

Yeah, I don't get "Edition Wars" -- it's a battle that everyone loses! Why anyone feels a need to "win" at this contest is beyond me.

it is like playing D&D. the object isn't to win. it is to have fun. you kill the opposition and take their stuff. :D

Sounds somewhat familiar. I had my mega house-ruled 2e/PO remix purring away like a kitten... an overweigtht kitten. There were several world concepts I would have to totally redo for 3e and was not looking forward to redoing them. So I kept on running 2e with my house/world rules and started a second 3e game.

That -- and the dawning realization how superior 3e's treatment of monsters was -- convinced me to leave 2e behind. My house ruled dropped considerably in length, since I could devote more time to detailing and less time to shoring things up.

It's inevitable that people put down others who don't like the same things they do.

Me, I've got a ton of 2e books. I liked it a whole lot. Played it for like 10 years. Yeah, one edition of a game, for 10 years. let me spell that for you t.e.n.

For all the grumbling about the "new" edition when 3e came out, I think the 2e folks kind of forgot that we had the longest running edition of any game I've ever seen (that was still in print).

But in 2000, I had no problem switching. The material was decent, and it was sort of a reset on the whole rule-book collection. Technically, it cost me money. But I liked the new edition. Now I haven't gone an switched to 3.5, but that's a matter of finance. I got students for players. No money. Whereas, we can get 3e Player's Handbooks for cheap. It works out just fine.

Let people play what they want. In the end, you're forced to play the edition that you can get players for...

not any more. :D

i've thrown off the yoke that was the 2000ed and/or 3.11ed for Workgroups.

i have players for my OD&D campaign.

OD&D(1974) is the only true game. All the other editions are just poor imitations of the real thing. :D

It is all about people. It is all game play. It is all about the flavour. I have player all 3 editions. I was drug screaming into 2E due most my players had the books. Yes the 3E phb are lacking in flavour. But Silly races, rules lawyers, munckins, Bad People have been around since the begining.
How about Dorcs. Half dwarf, Halforc. From first edition players.
How about halfling wizard riding a zombie orge as a mount. 2E
Half dragons 3E.
Play the game you are comfortable with. Have fun. Hey I am still occasionally play the 70 version of Easy money(rip off of monopoly) The eighties version up the prices and had one or two rule changes.

The story of the guy claiming to have inside sources of a D&D 4 Edition reminds me of a guy I met after a lecture in "Temporal Logics" end of the last year - he claimed to have already begun downloading the 4th season of 24. My friend and I tried to convince him that they weren`t even finished with 3rd season, but ... Well, I guess the guy just couldn`t count... :)
(By the way: is it crime to download movies and series that aren`t even produced yet? Remember, the story happened after a lecture of Temporal Logics, so ...)

The story about AD&D or D&D 3.x bashing reminds me of a common trait among us human. We always LOVE to find a distinction between ourselves and others and than bash them.
When I was in the Military Service (German Luftwaffe), it was like this:
Civilist => the other branches (especially the Heer / "army") => the other "squadron" => the other unit of our squadron.
(I am not sure if squadron is the right term in english - It`s called "Staffel" in German)
In our gaming group we assumed part of this is simply to make yourself important, feel better, and be (or at least feel) more attractive to the opposite gender. :)

People have a "Uniqueness" complex (Well, everybody except me :) ) ...
