So this Cleric is beating on my party.......

First Post
We have an rogue/assassin, a ranger, a fighter, and me a wizard/fatespinner. I'm 13th, and the rest are 12th level. The cleric is probably 13th as well, but he apparently has some nifty scrolls prepared and we're fighting on his turf (desacrate spell).

But here's big problem, he has a rod that keeps soaking up every spell I cast at him (rod of absorbtion?). I can't dispel his buff spells, and they're making it really hard for the ranger and fighter to hit. Notice I didn't include the assassin....he's already dead (his own stupid fault) :). I can't exactly cast area effect spells because I don't have the room without nuking my fighter. Now, I do possess an artifact that has some serious healing potential, but I'm not seeing the cleric running out of spells any time soon so outlasting him doesn't seem to be an option. I also have a chance to cast spells I haven't memorized (more of a role playing angle for my char), so potentially I would be able to cast anything, but the lower lvl the better.

We stopped last night in the middle of the battle because it just wasn't finishing any time soon.

So here's the question, how can we kill this evil cleric?

Clerics lack mobility. Use that against him.

Rock to Mud, Evard's Black Tentacles, Summon Monster (Thoqqua), Summon Monster (Lantern Archon), Wall of Ice (then back the tanks off and prepare your area effect blaster spells).

Fighter is a 2-h greataxe fairly standard fighter type
Ranger is an Archer...a very focused one
I am the wizard (only one caster in the party), and have lots of really nifty target the bad guy type of spells. These don't work since they're getting absorbed. However, I have lots of scrolls and potentially can cast any spell, preferably 5th level or lower.
I am a true neutral char, so I technically could summon a lantern archon, but it's probably not in my characters nature to do that. Plus, what lvl summon is that? The higher it is, the less likely I'd risk trying to cast it since it's not prepared.

Pleanty of other things you can summon (from the SRD):

3rd Level
Celestial black bear LG
Celestial bison NG
Celestial dire badger CG
Celestial hippogriff CG
Elemental, Small (any) N
Fiendish ape LE
Fiendish dire weasel LE
Hell hound LE
Fiendish snake, constrictor LE
Fiendish boar NE
Fiendish dire bat NE
Fiendish monstrous centipede, Huge NE
Fiendish crocodile CE
Dretch (demon) CE
Fiendish snake, Large viper CE
Fiendish wolverine CE

4th Level
Archon, lantern LG
Celestial giant owl LG
Celestial giant eagle CG
Celestial lion CG
Mephit (any) N
Fiendish dire wolf LE
Fiendish giant wasp LE
Fiendish giant praying mantis NE
Yeth hound NE
Fiendish monstrous spider, Large CE
Fiendish snake, Huge viper CE
Howler CE

Now, personally I'd take something Large and able to grapple (Constrictor or Ape), or something that uses Touch attacks (like the Lantern Archon).

Cloudkill- The Con damage might help your archer and fighter take him out.
Cast Protection from Cold on the fighter and then blast with Cone of Cold. Just hope he doesn't figure out what you're doing.
Wave of Fatigue.
Evard's Black Tentacles
Flaming Sphere

What's the location like? Transmute Rock to Mud and Transmute Mud to Rock would be fun.

Buff the hell out of the fighter and just let him butcher the cleric. Enlarge him and then hit him with Bull's Strength and Bear's Endurance. Then Enlarge the Ranger (you could use mass enlarge for this) and hit him with Cat's Grace and Bear's Endurance. Put Mage Armor or Shield on both of them. Polymorph the fighter into something more powerful too. Animate the assassin and use him for flanking. Throw Stoneskin on the fighter. Tack Pro:Evil on too. Heroism...Rage...Magic and Greater Magic Weapon...Keen Edge...Haste...Blur...Both forms of Invisibility...these are your friends right now.

If I remember, the Rod can only hold 50 spell levels.

Worse comes to worse, Cast True Strike on yourself and along with Greater Invisibility and just go and disarm him of his rod.

I don't recall if you need to hold the Rod for it to work. If so, have one of the fighter types either strike it (as in break the thing) or use a disarm on it.

It is kind of an ambiguous area and your DM might not allow it, but it is worth a shot.

Then, drop your dispel on his buffs and watch the blood fly.

How big a deal is it for a cleric to summon a monster that doesn't match their alignment?(sorry for hijacking the thread, but it came up!) I'm running a lawful neutral cleric of St. Cuthbert that, down the road, fully intends on summoning giant monstrous centipedes (lawful evil).

Good luck with your battle, I have no idea how to get around this cleric. Maybe ask for parley (heh heh)?

The location is a (approx) 30 x 70' room. The cleric is defending just outside a door in the middle of one of the 30' walls. The front door is covered in a blade barrier and a wind wall.

Area effect spells like evards or cloudkill aren't really options, since they'll undoubtedly hit our party members. Small damage spells like flaming sphere aren't too helpful since he doesn't seem to be running out of healing any time soon.

Buffing the fighter and ranger seems to be a good option....If I could just find time to do it :)
