So what about Basic D&D? (Merged w/"Basic D&D Set Thumbs Up")

Basic D&D Set Thumbs UP

I haven't finished reading my copy yet, but I just wanted to say that I love having a medium sized black dragon, orcs, kobolds and skeletons finally! I think there's like 16 miniature, 4 heroes (dwarf cleric, human figther, sorcerer and rogue) and 12 monsters.

The doubled sided cardstock maps are also heavy and ready to go with some great illos on them. I'll be using them for a while I can tell.

Dice are really cheap though. The illustrated dice look better.

Bah, back to reading.

Berin Kinsman posted the following breakdown at the UncleBear site:

Dungeons & Dragons Basic Set

Whether you like D20 or not, whether you need an introductory roleplaying game or not, the new Dungeons & Dragons Basic Set is cool for one very important reason: 16 miniatures for $25 bucks. For those keeping score, the non-random minis in this set are:

Regdar, Adventurer (uncommon) from the Giants of Legend expansion,
Lidda, Adventurer (uncommon) from the Giants of Legend expansion,
Aramil, Adventurer (uncommon) from the Giants of Legend expansion,
Eberk, Adventurer (uncommon) from the Giants of Legend expansion,
Medium Black Dragon (rare) from the Dragoneye expansion,
Troglodyte (common) from the Dragoneye expansion,
Dire Rat (common) from the Giants of Legend expansion,
Wolf Skeleton (common) from the Harbinger expansion,
2 Warrior Skeletons (common) from the Archfiends expansion,
2 Orc Warriors (common) from the Harbinger exansion,
2 Kobold Warriors (common) from the Harbinger expansion,
2 Kobold Skirmishers (common) from the Dragoneye expansion.

Sold separately, that's about $43 worth of minis. The black dragon alone goes for about $15, if you can find one.

How 'basic' is it? I remember hearing it was like the Adventure game, only going up a few levels. Also, how thick is the booklet(s)?
There are 3 booklets. There is the Quick Start Rules, 5 1/2 x 8 1/2, 6 pages. Next is the First Adventure Book, same size but 10 pages. Then there is the Advanced Rule Book, 8 1/2 x 11, 64 pages. This book has character generation rules and covers 1st and 2nd levels. It refers you to the PHB when you reach 3rd level.

These are absolutely my favorite thing about the set. I would be an instant customer if some enterprising company would start selling packs of these.

I checked out an opened set at my FLGS, so the following is from memory...

The monster stat blocks are very shortened. The spell stat blocks are reminicent of early D&D, that is four lines (Level, Range, Duration, and Saving throw) plus a short description.

There are only 4 classes, cleric, fighter, rogue, and sorcerer (tells folks to find other classes in the PHB). There are 4 races, humans, elves, dwarves, and halflings (tells folks that gnomes, half-elves and half-orcs can be found in the PHB). The list of skills is shortned to about 15. There is only one type of armor per modifier #. The choices of weapons are limited to about 15 weapons. Only about 4 spells per spell-level listed for each of the two spellcasting classes.

A very good "Basic" D&D package.
