I spotted this from Mearls over on Deep in the Game:

There might be 2000 official published feats, but maybe 1000 have ever actually been used at a gaming table, and 400 of those are actually useful.
(400 might sound like a lot, but when you consider there are 11 base classes, plus 12 or so other classes, plus feat prereqs keep only a certain slice of feats available to you at any given time, and the number becomes more manageable.)
