So, what do you want to play?

At this moment, I think I'd go for aclassic vanilla flavour: a Gandalfesque human wizard, probably a Servant of the Hidden Flame.

Tiefling warlock is also an option (I was a huge fan of tieflings since Planescape, and I loved the warlock since I first laid my hands on Complete Arcane), particularly if warlock's mentioned summoning ability is good.

EDIT: But, as it stands, our regular DM isn't very keen on the whole 4e idea... so, it looks like I'll be playing as a DM :p

I'll probably be DMing the first 4e game at our table.
When I first get my chance to play a character I think I would like to have a shot at archery and find out which class makes the best plain (non-magical/non-nature-based/non-spellcasting) archer.

1) Dragonborn Rogue traversing the wastes of the south and slowly fulfilling his destiny of reforging a desert empire of his people;

2) Human Cleric of the deity of pure goodness attempting to live his deity's command to the fullest;

3) Eladrin Wizard (what can I say - I am sometimes a fantasy traditionalist and the Eladrin are the new high-elves) coaxing my party to join me on expeditions to unravel the true nature of reality itself;

4) Heh, probably trying to 'stat up myself' in terms of D&D 4E stats and seeing how long it lasts!

5) Dwarven Fighter, rather unusually sent to gain exposure to the outside world by his clan for his overzealousness (even for a dwarf) in guarding the Dwarven interests against outsiders. Now he travelling with similar outsiders, he remains unpertrubed, as they may be a bad influence on other dwarves, but he, of course, considers himself to be uncorruptible by the decadent lifestyle of regular meals and sleep every night that they lead.

6) Elven Warlord leading his band of elves on a campaign to reclaim their erstwhile old forest from the fields and cities where it once lay, perhaps eventually uniting with the humans of the area to combat a greater threat threatening them both

7) Human Psion(icist) studying other minds to better understand his own

For my first campaign, I will probably be borrowing heavily from the shadowfell. I am all in favor of scary alternate versions of reality. Maybe I'll set up a plotline centered around an artifact or a curse that lets the bearer look into the shadowfell, and view the world around him in that manner. I'll have to set up all kinds of correspondence points between reality and the shadowfell as well as creepy types of feedback between them. For example, kill someone in the region the players are in, where the walls between our world and the next are week, and in the shadowfell the point where the death occurred draws the attention of something malevolent, which in turn does something in our world.

I'll work out the details later, and come up with some larger puzzle that has to be solved by moving back and forth between the two worlds for purposes of travel, and in order to set whatever has gone wrong right again.

I really have trouble deciding. Maybe I should really try a Cleric, because I really don't like playing this class now much, and want to see if that improves in 4th edition.

Maybe a Warlock? My current Warlock in the Savage Tides campaign is a lot of fun, and the different Patrons sound interesting. Maybe something feyish?

Or just a plain old fighter. Sometimes I just like playing th brute. :)

Or Rogue? It has been some time now since my last plain rogue...

Aaargh, too many options.

I just hope I won't be the only one DMing it in our group (a fate I already had with Arcana Evolved and Iron Heroes)*. (Assuming it doesn't turn out to suck) I hope we all adopt 4E as fast as we did 3E.

*) though if DMing is as easy - from the mechanical stand point - as advertised, it might be a lot more fun!

I'd say Star pact Warlock, but sadly without Wish and Gate to help my unspeakable masters come down to the game world, a good portion of the fun is lost.

* Human Paladin -- A grizzled soldier in an army, drinks and wenches a bit but has a very good heart who gets chosen by the gods.
* Dwarf Rogue/Wizard (Unaligned) (I like how they said you can multiclass and get the feel early -- I hate waiting till level 9 to get to Arcane Trickster for a 'real' Rogue/Wizard' -- however it works in 4E) -- A literal burglar of treasures arcane and esoteric.
* Eladrin or Dragonborn Warlord -- Either a charismatic duelist or an honorable mercenary-type.
