Its primary aim is to encourage people to write cool, awesome house rules and share them. Not just house rules - settings, rules modules, classes, templates, props, game aids ... the whole works. And not just for D&D and Pathfinder - for any game system.
How do we encourage this? We have a nifty Pay What You Like system. Each author can enter his/her PayPal details into the settings page (note that you can only do this once one person other than yourself has registered for updates about your houseule). Then anyone who like your work can pay you. They don't have to, and if they do, they can decide how much to pay you. It goes straight to your PayPal account.
Additionally, there are ways for people to register their interest in a house rule. If it's just a class or something, that's probably not relevant. But if you're working on something really awesome - a netbook, a setting, an entire rules module - and especially if that document is going to get updated from time to time - then folks can get notified when that happens. As a side-benefit, you get a number which shows how many people are interested in your creation.
Now, you don't have to use those features. They're there if you want them. Think of it like a little voluntary marketplace, where you can get in as deep as you wish, or paddle in the shallow end. But if you want, can dive in and work on your massive setting, releasing updates from time to time, with other members tagging your document, following along, and paying you the odd buck or two.
Finally, there's an inbuilt "Fan Creation of the Month" system. Any member can nominate a house rule for FCOTM, and a poll is started each month to determine the winner.
[h=3]What Do I Need To Do?[/h]
If you have an existing thread in this forum, you'll need to edit it before any of the above applies to you. Go to "Edit House Rule" in the new menu box thing and enter the details.
To make this whole setup work, it will really help if you try to keep your initial post updated with the latest version of any files or documents, and to note the version number change in the settings. This will ensure folks following along are notified and that they can easily access your creation.
[h=3]Keeping Track[/h]
You can click "Request Updates" on any thread in this forum. You'll then be notified if the author updates the initial post with new files or documents.
Additionally, if you go to your settings you have some entries in the menu on the left - fan creations you 'liked', those you requested updates from, your own fan creations, and so on.
And finally, in your (and anyone else's you look at) profile, there's a tab which tells you what stuff they've created. So if you like something someone made, it's worth checking to see what else they did.
[h=3]Fan Creation of the Month[/h]
Fan Creation of the Month, also known as FCOTM, is a contest that awards members who release their creations to the community.
Any free creation that adds to a game is eligible for the Fan Creation of the Month award. Any member is eligible to nominate a fan creation for Fan Creation of the Month.
What determines the Fan Creation of the Month?
FCOTM is based on a simple nomination system. The five houserules with the most nominations in a month’s time are automatically generated into a final poll. All members are then able to vote for their favorite choice amongst the five finalists.
How can I nominate a modification for the contest?
Members are allowed to nominate as many items every month as they wish, Nominations can also be cancelled during the month.
Every houserules thread has a link under Houserule Options titled: 'Nominate for FCOTM' that allows you to nominate that creation.
[h=3]I'm a publisher: can I put things here?[/h]
You can't directly sell things here, but you are welcome to use the "Pay What You Like" system. Alternatively, you are welcome to put demo/lite versions of products you have for sale elsewhere (and you can provide a link to where fans can buy the full version), but the thing you put in this forum must have actual content, not just be an ad. I myself am going to put the initial WotBS and ZEITGEIST PDFs here in the hope that it'll make people want to buy the rest.
