So, where do you game?

Basin?

First Post
My group of friends have been gaming for quite a few years. One of the main obstacles of getting everyone together is finding a good place to play. For us, gaming requires a kind of environment that doesn't really exist in most people's homes. One of my friend's dad was a lawyer, and he let us use a spare room he had at his law office. It had all the right elements, big table, no distractions, food closeby, and ever since his dad got rid of that office things haven't been the same. Where do you guys play and what elements do you think create the ideal gaming setting?

My group rents a room in the same town most of us live. It's for enterprise use. The last tennants had a hamster farm there or something. :)

But really, now that the smell is gone it's quite a nice place. There are shops and restaurants nearby. We have maps of all the campaign worlds on the walls and a table large enough to accomodate the big Chessex battlemat plus character sheets. Some of the guys collects miniatures so we have hundreds of them lying around in boxes and stuff. We have another table that they use for Warhammer.

In the DM corner you'll find a big Regdar, promotion, card thingy that's more than 5' tall. We can't cook there but we can make coffee. There are purple tapestries that divide the room into one gaming area (with the big table) and one gaming lounge (with sofas and the Warhammer-tabletop.

There are about ten of us and we each pitch in $20 per month. It's perfect!

"Oh we can have the Olympics over at our house"

Yeah, everyone comes to my apartment to game, whether I am running the game or someone else is. I'm in the most central location, own the most books (gaming and otherwise) and have a nice little artificial lake to look over when people get bored ;)

Pretty typical, I suppose...

I think we do the "typical" thing -- play at the home of the DM.

As the GM my group did that until recently...

My apartment is rather small. We would set up my kitchen table (with eaves attached) but it didn't leave much room to move about. One night a player accidently smacked the stove while moving his chair. Which blew out the pilot light on the gas stove. Thankfully there are TWO pilot lights. But for the next 24 hours the stove pumped natural gas into my kitchen. The second pilot light burned it off safely. Once I discovered this I attempted to relight the pilot. In the attempt I gave myself second degree burns on three of my fingers. So...

Now we game at one of the players houses. It means a 40+ mile drive for me but it's better for the rest of the group. I hate to drive but he has a cavernous kitchen, lives alone and has no pets. It's a better gaming environment. But it means I have to drive and my fiance isn't around... I also miss having my gaming book library about as quick reference.

I dream of having an apartment or home someday that has more gaming room. My last apartment was perfect but it burned down... I'm not found of fire...

One group plays at the DM's place. I doubt we'd ever play anywhere else, since this DM has spend hundreds of dollars on buildings and dungeon molds.

The other group plays at the house of the 2 laziest players, though to be fair Heidi often whips up dinner if the game runs late or at least some snacks.

The other group moves a bit. We used to meet regularly at one guys place, but for whatever reason, usually he needed to work at home, we'd move to another member's apartment.

For the game I currently DM, we play at my house. For the gamer I play in, we tend to alternate between 4 of our houses.

In almost every case, we have a nice-sized table to hangout at, though it can be a bit crowded. I try to keep a card table out for snacks to keep some of the gaming space a bit more clear.

Most often, we play in my apartment complex, because I'm the most centrally located of all the players. Most of the time nowadays, we reserve the clubhouse for gamenights. It only requires a deposit and is a nice, large area. Otherwise, we game in my apartment. Since our group is somewhat large at times (we vary from 3 to 8 players) it can get rather cramped.

If, for some reason, my apartment isn't feasible, we play at the DM's house. It's nice there, but has roughly the same space problems as my apartment with the added bonus of a rugrat running around. (He's a cute little kid, but we often swear without thinking around him).

When I'm the DM, we play at my house.

When my friend DMs, we play at my house.

I'm just conveniently located. :)
