D&D 4E So who is going to measure distances in 4E rather than use the grid?

Ever since 2E, my group tended not to use the grid much, we'd use it to eyeball short distances, but we usually reached for a ruler rather than counting squares. Small critters took up 20mm, larger critters took up whatever thier base was, etc... It happens in almost every game we play and I wonder who else plays like this? And will your group continue to ignore the grid and measure into 4E?

Neither of the above. We'll just keep eyeballing it; if it's clear nobody else can get to a given opponent, whoever is left out will have to wait. We've never used a grid to the extent of your example (though our boards have a grid on them, we allow much more fluidity in movement and positioning than the grid rules can handle), and we've never measured distance with a ruler...we just count squares and if there's a judgement call, that's what dice are for. :)

'Measuring' implies the use of minis. I wing it, because that's the only way it feels enough like a combat for my tastes without putting pinhole cameras on the minis to provide the players their ONLY view of the battle and creating a tick-based d20 combat system.

We normally play on a grid but one time I forgot the appropriate white-board so we played on a non-gridded surface. It was interesting. There were a few, how shall I say, heated moments about whether or not we had range or line of sight, but on the whole I would think we could switch to a gridless system if we put our mind to it. Having played on a grid for so long, you tend to overlay it in your mind anyway, which kind of defeats the object I suppose.

Nice diagrams as well, thanks Frank.

I'll definitely stick with a grid--a *hex* grid!

BTW, I don't suppose that your counter set is downloadable?
Oh it is, available across the net on dozens sites offering video game sprites. Have a good ad blocker going and do an ad aware sweep often.

Please note, they don't come as counters, I just copy and paste them with paint to be counters.

I could send you a Rapidshare link if you like.
I would like it, please :)

I wish I could get my group to convert to the measuring stick, rather than a grid.

I detest the grid.

But my players seem to require it, rather than just letting things be measured when necessary.
