D&D 5E Some recent tweets.

@seekay Druid's Elemental Wild Shape- just MM p124-125 guys or any creature w/ elemental type? Same with PotA prophets' weapons?
@JeremyECrawford Air, earth, fire, and water elementals—those are specific creatures, not creature types or subtypes. #DnD

@selectstriker2 OK, so if you throw the magic stone its a spell attack but if you use it with a sling then it is a ranged weapon?
@JeremyECrawford It's a spell attack you're making with a sling.

@seekay "a Mezzoloth exhales toxic fumes" but its Cloudkill is "innate spellcasting," does a Paladin's Aura of Warding resist it?
@JeremyECrawford Yes, because cloudkill is a spell. #DnD

BrailSays Simu Inability to learn, how literal?Meet someone new, cant remember their name? Or a mechanical "cant level up" sense?
JeremyECrawford The intent is that the simulacrum can't learn any new abilities. #DnD
BrailSays How is ability defined here?Mechanical v literal.Sim learn the name of new butler? How to navigate new region? How to write?
JeremyECrawford A game ability.
BrailSays So a SIM of wizard could learn mundane things, such as where a spellbook is,but not actually learn a spell from it?
JeremyECrawford A spell is a game ability.
BrailSays Yeah, I'm saying that the Sim could research mundane info on where to FIND the book, but nothing IN the book?
JeremyECrawford It's up to your DM how much the simulacrum can do while abiding by the limitations set by the spell.
selectstriker2 OK, so if you throw the magic stone its a spell attack but if you use it with a sling then it is a ranged weapon?
JeremyECrawford It's a spell attack you're making with a sling.
selectstriker2 so it is a ranged spell attack that you make with a weapon. Seems odd that you can do that
JeremyECrawford That's what the magic stone spell does—let you make a spell attack via a sling.
selectstriker2 would you get the same benefit by throwing the stone rather than using the sling?
JeremyECrawford No, since you're not using a finesse or ranged weapon.

willowways does reach weapons/pole arm's second ability change sentinel to the reach of the weapon for sentinels last ability?
JeremyECrawford The final benefit of the Sentinel feat is unaffected by a weapon's range. The benefit is limited to 5 feet. #DnD
orcboss Invisible attacker shoots target. Is hiding again for attacker an action? Is roll vs perception or passive perception?
JeremyECrawford W/o a special ability, hiding in combat requires an action. Active search: ability check. Otherwise: passive. #DnD
ChaosDingus If you have Spell Sniper and use Distant Spell, is the range quadrupled?
JeremyECrawford Yep!

‏@BrailSays Lvl 7 spell Resurrect, how much can it regrow from?If you have a hand, will it regrow the rest?
JeremyECrawford The intent is that very little of a body is needed for resurrection. The exact amount is up to the DM. #DnD

Mirandajboyd Does Goodberry provide water as part of the nourishment or just food? I say water too because it's part of nutrition. #dnd
JeremyECrawford The nourishment provided by goodberry is meant to be like food, not water, but a DM can say otherwise. #DnD
KaosDevice If a dragon is grappled with Bigby's Hand can it still attack and use its breath weapon?
JeremyECrawford The grappled condition limits movement, not attacks, spellcasting, and the like. #DnD

‏@Jacob91159385 Does a Night Hag's Heartstone only allow it to travel to the Etheral Plane, or can players that have a stone do that?
JeremyECrawford A heartstone is meant to work only for a hag, but a DM can rule otherwise. #DnD
dndMontreal Thanks for the chat at GenCon! Does the 1/2orcs r.endurance trait carry over during Wild Shape? Or spells like barkskin?
JeremyECrawford As DM, I let any racial trait work w/ Wild Shape, unless the trait relies on anatomy that the beast lacks. #DnD

@Edpiper Does Spirit Guardian move with caster or is it stationary? It's not worded like Anti-Magic Field or Aura of Purity. Both Move
@JeremyECrawford The spirits of spirit guardians are meant to move with the caster: "They flit around you … for the duration." #DnD

@NDevito1 Casting Wish: do you always have a 33% chance of never casting it again or is it only if you cast another spell b4 a rest?
@JeremyECrawford There's a 33% chance of not casting wish again if it does anything other than duplicate a spell of level 0-8. #DnD

@fritomuncher Any chance of getting an in depth stealth explination? Way too many people at AL fight about it.
@JeremyECrawford In your experience, what are some of the most contentious points about the stealth rules?

@aus_maverick Sneak attack when target within 5ft of an ally. Represents him being distracted? How about within 10ft of a polearm ally?
@JeremyECrawford The 5 ft. limitation in Sneak Attack is unaffected by reach. It represents a close distraction. #DnD

@jengagne Hey, 2nd part of Detect Thoughts, you can scan through a door, right? Why is "you can see" a condition for 1st part then?
@JeremyECrawford In detect thoughts, it's 1 action to read thoughts if you can see your target, at least 2 actions if you can't. #DnD

@adamPollack7 does dispell magic effect an arcane ward?
@JeremyECrawford Dispel magic ends spells. Arcane Ward isn't a spell. #DnD

@cjstevo #DnD Does a the extra bonus attack from a monk's Martial arts add the character's Dex or Str bonus to damage?
@JeremyECrawford A monk chooses whether to use Str. or Dex. for unarmed strikes (PH, 78). #DnD

@SpenceCam_LBP Does the damage from armor of agathys apply to temp HP from false life? and can temporary HP Stack?
@JeremyECrawford Armor of Agathys deals damage only while you have the temp. hp it grants. And temp. hp don't stack (PH, 198). #DnD

@NGirbes Does a wood elf druid keep its "Fleet of Foot" 35' speed in Wild Shape, or it would use the beast's speed instead?
JeremyECrawford In Wild Shape, the beast's speed replaces the druid's speed (typically 25+ ft.). Modifiers can then apply. #DnD
Plaguescarred Hi Jeremy, does a melee weapon that is thrown count as ranged? I.e Do Archery Fighting Srtyle work wt thrown dagger?
JeremyECrawford The Archery feature is intended to work with ranged weapons. A dagger is a melee weapon even when you throw it.
Carlosmoya79 So throwing a dagger is a ranged weapon attack with a melee weapon, right? You get disad if you throw at 5'
JeremyECrawford That's correct.

@couturerob Can dispel magic remove a planar binding spell? #dnd
JeremyECrawford It can.
Clint_Cranford If falling damage maxes at 20d6, could you fall thousands of feet and still live if the DM rolls bad? #4chan
JeremyECrawford You can fall a great distance and survive. But a DM might rule that certain landings are harder to survive. #DnD

Andreasfr1 Is it possible to Twin Spell "Chain Lightning"? You only target the One creature.
JeremyECrawford No, since chain lightning targets multiple creatures/objects (the spell's description even calls them targets). #DnD
BadSkarl If I cast Haste, can I take a second action on the very same turn or does it not take effect until next round?
JeremyECrawford Haste takes effect immediately. You can cast it on yourself and take the extra action on the same turn. #DnD
Inxanity1 For the next Sage Advice column on the dnd website, could we possibly get a list for the MM that sorts by Type?
JeremyECrawford I think you'll be pleased about the next Sage Advice …
EdKruze If I Incapacitate (Hypnotic Pattern) a flying creature unsupported by magic/hover, does it crash to the ground?
JeremyECrawford A flyer falls if its speed is reduced to 0 and it isn't hovering or being held aloft by magic (PH, 191). #DnD
EdKruze Does incapacitate qualify? An incapacitated creature has no movement actions, but its speed isn't specifically changed to 0
JeremyECrawford Going back to your original question, hypnotic pattern does reduce your speed to 0, so if you're flying, the spell can drop you.

I tweeted him months ago about magical rods used as weapons (club/mace?), but never got a reply. Could someone more likely to get a reply ask for me? I'm an AL DM/player, so it's good to know how to handle situations where my Fighter/Warlock decides to swing with his Rod of the Pact Keeper instead of switching to his rapier. The AL version of RotPK has a quirk requiring a Dex save when picked up. Knowing the weapon profile of rods will also decide a potential synergy with Shillelagh.
