Buying Twitter was never about it being profitable. It was about social engineering.

And it did / is still doing that job perfectly.
I do not believe this, this is post purchase spin. As far as I can tell; twitter was bought because he could not back down from a boast on twitter (or rather he tried to back down after the contracts were signed) and he based the price off a meme.

If anyone is being socially engineered by his action on twitter, it is himself.

It was a bit of both.

He memed his way into buying it, but when he couldn't worm his way out of the sale, he needed to give people a reason to lend him the money for the purchase.

Which wasn't really hard to do, since it was the largest social media platform in the world and a lot of people who don't like free speech were happy to help him buy it.

Eh, it's another person mouthing off. The chance of drama that would affect us is on the verge of nil.

Buying Hasbro in its sad shape would be more likely to see it shutter than change. Even if that stopped new product, it's still under CC, and with the dozens of off-shoots these days it'd still be around in one form or another.

I'd be more likely to miss GI Joe/Transformer reissues - but there's always The Corps and Diaclone, I guess.
I am one to heavily promote the idea that we own our own games, have lots of options, and, as you say, through the CC, can make many more games for lifetimes to come.

But if WOTC / Hasbro cratered, either on their own or though the acquisition of a monster, it could put significant limitations on the growth of the hobby. Those of us already in it have lots of freedom but D&D is the top of the funnel when it comes to bringing new people in. It's possible the news alone could help at least bring attention to the hobby and its many options but it could also cause the influx of new players to cease.

Hasbro's Market cap is $8B which is a lot less than Twitter's was when he purchased it. WOTC would be even less if they split it off and sold it to him. So it is easily doable for him either way.

As far as the hobby goes WOTC being owned by Musk is probably a lot better for us than being owned by Hasbro.

There have been some VERY specific explanations why this is inaccurate. Hasbro is not ripe or easy for takeover. Plus, apparently the board has at least one person who knows and hates Musk, it wouldn't be the same as Twitter.

Hasbro seems perfectly happy to sit back and let WoTC, WoTC - as long as they're making money. Musk seems MUCH more micromanager oriented and would push D&D to his specific vision - not one many of us would be happy with.

But all that said, this is almost certainly just trolling from Musk. He has no real interest in Hasbro like he did in Twitter.

Ah yes. An AI written PHB that requires D&D Beyond subscriptions to play would be great. At least it won't be woke.

But in this case his sycophants would be the players. Right now Hasbro and by extension WOTC is focused on $$$ and it has not really been good for the hobby.

So the OGL debacle and the Sigil problems and firing a third of the staff last year were just WOTC being WOTC?

I trust Musk's vision more than Hasbro's.
