Some Tragic News

One of my former students, who graduated in 2004, committed suicide last night. I taught him for 4 consecutive years. He played clarinet in my concert band and was in the group that performed at Carnegie Hall in 2004. He was a great kid, socially inept like most of us, but a great kid. He just never really fit in. Band and chess club were the two places he felt welcome in high school. He was one of a tight-knit group that played CCG's almost every day after school for about 2 or 3 years (Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon, Magic, etc.) at the tables I have in the corner of the band room. I would let them play while I did whatever I needed to do after school was released and I would kick them out when I was ready to go home. When we went on trips, he usually hung out with me and the other adults, as I said, he didn't fit in too well, but I think he liked the company of adults more, felt like we were more on his maturity level and understood him better.

Such a shame. This is "only" the second former student of mine to pass (I have been teaching for 13 years). The first was two years ago in an auto accident. I have just been so unsure of my emotions all day. Thanks ENWORLD for providing a forum where I could get this out.
