I remember Bargle.

He showed up in a homebrew game where I was a player and became a very big thorn on our sides for the next 8 years or so before succumbing to the machinations of his enemies that allowed the adventuring group Ascending Blades to finally end his life.

Ah I remember Bargle..... and how much we all hated him.

I think there's no greater testament to the greatness of a villain than how fondly the PCs remember his death.

And, since no one's mentioned it... Bargle sort of gets his due in the Poor Wizard's Almanacs and on into the AD&D Mystara information. Eventually, halfings from the neighboring Five Shires (which was often targetted by the Barony's raiders) are able to convince the king of Karameikos that his cousin the baron is is psychotic despot. They do this by kidnapping the king and taking him on a forced tour of the barony. The king wises up and fields a force against the baron, which is aided by pretty much every halfling living in the Shires (they really hated these guys).

As the baron is preparing for battle, Bargle puts his Plan B into motion- loot the baronial treasury and teleport far, far away. The baron's forces are defeated, the baron himself escapes, and Bargle blows all his ill-gotten gains on marketing a line of cheap magic items and wizardry books while dodging bounty hunters from the shires and assassins from the baron.

Not exactly an epic end, but definately one fitting for such a sniveling toad...

Also, what ever happened to Zanzer Tem from Escape From Zanzer's Dungeon mini-module fame?

Now that brings back memories! I got started on D&D with that boxed set! As I recall he escaped, didn't he? You found a note or a map for the "Stonefast" dungeon at the end of his dungeon though, where a white dragon laired, so he might have ended up there (though I don't think it said he went there).

I don't think anything ever became of Zanzer Tem after that product...right?

Bargle the Infamous? From the Black Eagle Barony? In Karameikos?

Is that who you are talking about?

Curse you Bargle! Cuuuuuurrrrse yooou! >shakes fist in empty rage, then collapses sobbing<

I loved that cleric. >sniffle<

Hm, guess who's gonna be a major villain in my next campaign?

If I recall, the reward on the Baron Ludwig was something like 500,000 and the reward on Bargle the Infamous was half that. Not that I'd ever let my PCs collect, mind you.

You may be thinking of a couple of pictures in the main book which depicted portraits of the Baron and Bargle before-and-after the halflings decided to "improve" on them...

Incidentally, I've never actually seen the adventure that everyone is referring to here, I encountered Bargle through the Gazetteers. The basic set I had was the full-color cover (by Otus, probably) of a party fighting a green dragon. It had one rulebooks and a copy of B2, Keep on the Borderlands. And of course the cheap plastic dice with crayon. Is the red box everyone is talking about the one with the dragon on a horde, and two seperate books instead of one?
