Song of Fire and Ice question

Harmon

First Post
I am listening to the audio version of a Game of Throwns, about two years after reading the books. My wife and I can't remember what happens to Syrio Forel (Arya's dance teacher). Does anyone recall if he dies or if Martin just leaves it hanging that Ser Meryn kills him?

Considering that we never hear from him again after that scene, and when we left him he was fighting a veteran knight clad in full armor while himself armed with only a stick, it's probably safe to assume that Syrio died.

Is never seen in the first 3 books again. I still am holding out hope he pops up though. I mean he was first sword to the king of Braavos. He is the best fencer in the land, no studid knight could really beat him

Right. But still, Martin doesn't actually say what happened to him.

Its my hope that he survives and pops up somewhere useful to the other characters, though I feel that hope is in vein. Vetern knight clad in steel vs a broken wooden sword leather clad fencer- not much hope, but one never knows. :)

I am also one of those holding out hope, he was a cool character.

It is never stated that he has died, which is a bit unusual for a named character like him in this series. Plus there is actually a whisper of a hint later that he may be alive. I don't have the books in front of me so can't recall exactly. But I believe it's when Arya is in the horse stalls later and she 'hears a voice whisper to her' advice like Syrio... which you would think is just in her head, since she does that alot, but the book actually remarks that she jumps at the sound.

Many people think that he may be a "Faceless man", and perhaps even the same person as Jaquen. The theory being that Syrio was captured and thrown into the black cells. There he changes identity (like Jaquen does in front of Arya later) into Jaquen, and maybe that is why Rorge and Biter are so afraid of him.

Who knows... :uhoh:

"Arya... You will go to the Dagobah system..." ;)

My opinion: I think Syrio might have been the faceless man Arya later "befriends". It could be the knight simply beat Syrio down and took him prisoner in the hopes of finding out Arya's location. If so, Syrio could be still in King's Landings prison, too.
