Out of curiousity -- what's the ratio between cost of material component and XP the sorceror has to spend?

1XP to every 25GP of material component cost.

How about giving sorcerers a single 'Arcane Focus', like clerics have a 'Divine Focus'?

Simply put, there would be a special semi-precious object unique to each sorcerer that they can use as an all-purpose focus for their arcane spells that require one (sorcerer spells only).

How does that idea land in here?

Thats a good one too especialy if its in line with the feel of magic in the campaign.
I just think the no components thing fits so perfectly with how sorcerers have been depicted.
But that ideas a good one...really for any arcane spellcaster. you know theres an item creation feat for enhancing a special focus for a wizard or sorcerer in the Quintessential Wizard

I'll chime in here - I also have playtested Monte's Sorcerer, particularly in the lower levels. For those, it works quite well, and there is very little overpowering going on, considering his balance was to remove defenses and raise the bar on some particularly good spells. One thing that is oft forgotten with Monte's Sorcerer is that the spell lists are skewed higher with support and "buff" spells. He is much more offensively oriented, but is not able to become a chain-hasting fool until 8th level, and cannot even cast the Shield spell until 4th level.

Otherwise, he has class skills that actually make use of his Charisma, known spells are slightly higher (about 1 level higher on the progression chart, and spells per day are the same. If you do use the standard sorcerer list with his alternate Sorcerer, Monte warns that he is far too powerful. His alternate list gives the kind of guidelines you need to incorporate new spells at the correct level for this caster.

Well, I thought the changed spell list was a bit excessive on removals and level-raises especialy since the only spell increase it gets is 1 more at each spell level past first
its especialy hard to say with the revisions coming out..we know haste is being made less poweful(especialy from a sorcerers standpoint) others probably as well.
I think the variant sorcerer would be able to use the same spell list as the wizard and actualy be on equal footing with him instead of inferior in a number of ways and superior in one or two.
The reduced spell list also doesnt really make much sense to me from a storyline/magical logic standpoint...I dont really want to be herded into playing the Sorcerer as a machine gun if I dont want to.
But your right its a very fine line..and I havent actualy played it yet...we'll see what happens. Thanks for the input

While I found some of Monte's sorcerer suggestions worhtwhile, I still found it a pretty favourless class. I've just whipped up my own version (in the houserules forum) that smooths things out, adds flavour and keeps some of Monte's (And others, lets be fair) ideas such as no components.

Insofar as metamagic feats though, my initial reaction would be to agree that it may push the boundaries of versitility to a slightly too high power level, but the +1 lvl suggestion sounds about right...

Yea after thought and reading peoples posts I realize the full round cast time isnt that bad...although I believe it should be ignored for Quicken.

I read your Sorcerer Kannik...the one on your page anyway...its interesting. I like the idea of elementalist. personaly I'd like to see a good sorcerer and a good elementalist seperately, but I definitly like what you did. Although if I remember there were a few spells in your list that seemed odd from an elemental perspective but I dont remember it that well..and thats always a challenge anyway

Yea after thought and reading peoples posts I realize the full round cast time isnt that bad...

One interesting side effect is that if a wizard has prepared Still spells, he can cast them while grappled. The sorcerer, with his flexible, apply-Still-Spell-on-the-fly approach, actually can't.
