Spell effects and death

James McMurray

First Post
Wat happens to a spell's effects when the caster dies? I know I've asked this question before, but it was right before I went on vacation and I can't find that thread now. Heck, the only reason I know I've asked it is because the subject autocompleted for me. :)

Thanks!

Nothing special happens with spell effects when the caster dies.
That is, spells end when their duration ends, not because of other events.

He is correct.
In all the games I've played in we seem to be waiting for a floating corpse to come within range so we could loot it.
Sure does suck to KO'd 360' up when the cleric can't fly. Comon 10% stabilize!

Unless the duration is Concentration :)

One of the DMs I played with decided that all spell effects ended when you fell unconscious!!! Man, that pissed me off. It was the climatic battle of the campaign and I had just spent a whole wack of rounds buffing the paladin for battle against a red dragon when I got chewed on badly. Seeing that things weren't going as excepted (the dragon wasn't winning) he decides that all the spells I had cast disappeared.

Generally it causes too much trouble and too much book keeping.
Who cast haste? How about Bull Strength on the fighter? Bulls Strength on the Rogue? How about fly? It gets ugly too fast.
As a DM I've found it usually helps you more than hurts you. Hopefully you can turn that one back on him.
"The fighter is held."
"Naw we killed the mage remember?"
(DM Grumbling) "Oh yeah."

Well, nothing special happens... the caster stops concentrating ;)

One of the DM's around here (whose campaigns I'm not in) rules that all casters loose all their prepared spells when they fall unconscious. It makes it rather boring to play a spellcaster.
