Spell-less Ranger confirmed by Mearls

Hi everyone,

In a different thread, Mike Mearls commented that it would be entirely possible to run a no-magic campaign with only the fighter, rogue, warlord and ranger classes. That says to me that the ranger isn't going to have access to any kind of magic, and I know that will make some people happy.

His original post is here.

Cheers,
Jonathan

If there are still people that claims they heard nothing good about 4E yet, this news is definitely going to change that.

Good news indeed.

Good news?

Wonderful news..!

Finally I can stop looking confused when new players ask me why rangers aren't just warrior hunters... Yay!

Okay, that sounds dumb, I know, I know... But it just happens so often. No one I've played 3rd Edition with actually likes that rangers have magic, most (myself included) use one variant or another to swap magic for something else.

Spell-less Rangers make me happy and looking forward to 4th Edition just that little bit more.

The other thing that Mearls said is that 4e will be customizable. He says it'll be easy to play no-magic games (and it's probably safe to assume that means it'll be easy to play low-magic games as well), it'll be easy possible to play classless games, and it'll be easy possible to customize the base classes (eg. if you want a fighter who doesn't depend on heavy armor, just give him a flat AC bonus instead).

If that doesn't make the anti-4e crowd even just a little less anti-4e, then I don't think anything will ...

Interesting.
If all that differentiates classes are their talents, feats, class skills and their flat bonuses to Defenses and BAB, it's gonna be simple to come up with a classless game.
It also implies that roles and power sources are pure subjective terms, maybe...
I like it!
