Spellcraft and counterspelling

When counterspelling, can you do a spellcraft to determine the spell that's being cast before you choose to counterspell it?

Well... given that you have to use the same spell to counter, you kinda have to.

Remember that you have to ready an action to counterspell, though. So if it turns out he's casting Create Water, and you don't care, you've still wasted your standard action.
