Spellsword - is it weak?

You mean Raumathari Battlemage? Yeah, it is a good class for mage/fighter wannabes. So is Eldritch knight. And maybe the new CW Spellsword too. The T&B spellsword is useless nowadays.

I DM a campaign and one of my players is a fighter/mage. He is Outsider, so he has proficiency in all simple and martial weapons from that. He is Rogue1/wiz6/EK10 at the moment and I bet he doesn't lose in AC when compared to a rogue1/wiz6/spellsword10. Maybe 1 or 2 points. On the other hand, not using armour as main defence has some better sides.

Here are some points that can help the non-armour using fighter/mages:

-Bracers of armour +8 (+13 max, with +5 specials)
-Improved Mage Armour spell (Unapproachable east 1hour/lvl, +8 Armour bonus)
-Masterwork animated buckler +5 (no penalties of any kind, +6 shield bonus)
-The crystal material from A&EG that lowers ASF by 20% from shield or armour (expensive). With this, you can use normal animated shield instead of buckler.
-Elven leafweave padded armour (A&EG), lowers the ASF to 0%, no other penalties. Make it +1 and you can add +9 worth of special enchantments to it.
-High dex, and dex boosting items.

In fact, even the main tank/melee IMC uses the bracers+8/Elven leafweave padded +1, heavy fortification, called, ... something. With greatsword and animated shield, of course.

The ASF lowering ability of T&B spellsword is (from optimization point of view) not used at all.

Happily, it seems it has become a viable, or at least better, choice in the CW. I have already ordered it from amazon, just waiting it to arrive. I want to see the dervish, as one of my players (the EK/wizard) became interested in it.

Btw, the wiz/EK IMC uses a lot of polymorphing when fighting. Being the biggest demon/devil/whatever with something like 20 natural and 3X strength helps alot. Makes him quite even with the barb/fighter/wiz1/planarchampion half-dragon.
