Splatbooks to Beware of?

Yeah, but I doubt that in a fantasy Africa, Hippopotomai would be the No1 killer.

And why are Hippopotomai in a expansion that I understand is all about deserts?

Shivering Touch, page 104

Touch spell, 3d6 Dex damage, no save, but spell resistance:Yes.

Next on the page is Shivering Touch, Lesser, 1rst level, 1d6 Dex, otherwise identical.

Lesser shivering touch states that the creature touched shivers uncontrollably for the duration, and that shivering creatures take 1d6 Dex damage. Once the duration is over, no shivering. I'd assume that the same applies to shivering touch, especially since that also lists a duration.

Of course not. After all, even the regular hippopotamus blanches at the thought of the dire hippopotamus. My copy of Sandstorm is loaned out, but IIRC, it has a CR of 12, which is pretty mean for an animal.

To expand on Mr. Mayhem's note, hippopotamai do live in the Nile, and were important to the Egyptians, who're one of the sources of stuff for Sandstorm.

Why a dire weasel in particular? And what's so special about it?

Dire Weasels deal d4 unsaveable Con damage per round while attached (their special ability).

So you ride your massively advanced Dire Weasel (every level you have is advancing it with this build) into combat and attach. Normally, while they're attached their AC drops to 12, but you use Mounted Combat to protect it while it exsanguinates your victim and you full attack them. After a spirited charge to shave off a bunch of HP.

Heh, can be aggresive, those hippos. The number one human killer from the animal world remains the crocodile though. Or alligator - I forget which one it is exactly.

Pinotage

Probably only because hippos are easier for humans to spot and avoid. I've read accounts of a territorial hippo biting a crocodile to death.

I remember on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, someone got a question where it asked which animal had more fatalities in Africa in the past year, and the guy thought it was crocodiles, but it was hippos ;) Silly guy, he should have had the Hippo Turning feat, then he might've won $250,000!

Even so, it seems an, erm, very Specific ability.

If it is an undead Hippopotomus do your turn/rebuke attempts stack?

Will we be seeing a "Hippo" subtype?
or
"HippoHunter" prestige class?

Heck, I'm tempted to buy the book now just for this.

Hippo subtype, that would be awesome! :D

Thing is, the hippo turning is just one of the abilities the feat gives. It's a special feat called Chosen of Tem-Et-Nu or some such, representing a special connection to a LG river-god.
