First time I ran it: PCs adopted Meepo (who turned out to be a crack shot with a crossbow) and he survived the entire adventure. He later re-appeared in the campaign (about fifteen years later, game time) as the aged king of the kobolds and requested aid from the PCs. He was -- by FAR -- the most loved and respected NPC of that campaign.
Second time: The PCs -- a very lawful but not very good party -- agreed to help the kobolds against the goblins and return the dragon to Meepo. After the Queen gave Meepo to them as a guide, he got them to agree to help him overthrow the Queen and become king of the kobolds. They slaughtered every single goblin, captured Calcrix, and then tied him up and slaughtered every kobold as well. They left him, broken-hearted and miserable as the "king" of an empty and deserted complex.
