[SPOILERS]Angel 5.1 Discussion

There are two things I don't get. One, and I hope that explain this, how did they get the amulet back? Wasn't Spike in the Hellmouth when he died? The second is why didn't the wet works team take out the windows in the Angel fight? These guys seemed like they knew what they were doing. They knew Angel was a Vampire. Shot out the windows!!
One: that's a mystery to be solved. It was delivered in an unmarked envelope with what looked like an address written in sharpie pen. He was in the chamber above the Hellmouth, yes...but there's no reason to think that someone didn't just pop back down in the crater left behind and grab the amulet. Possibly even Buffy herself, though I suspect there'll be more to it than that. Angel got it in the beginning of the episode, and prompty ignored it until the closing scene.

Two: Same reason as how Angel was able to travel at daytime: exposure to a little sunlight isn't going to kill him immediately. He'll burn, yes, and inside of a minute or so, he might be destroyed. But that's precious time lost. Considering the fact that they didn't come to fight Angel (but were instead there to slaughter a class of schoolchildren) and that Angel has kicked their butts repeatedly prior to this, it seems obvious. If you want to think of it in gaming terms, he won the initiative, has multiple attacks and a high FORT save.

Okay here is my opinion as if any one cared.

Eve - Evil cool that reminded me of the Mayor from buffy. Not as campy but similiar.

Harmony - obvious comic relief but Joss has a habit of twisting the obvious so I won't discount her yet. I am surprised she is competent enough to be the CEO's assitant maybe she found her nitch in the steno pool.

Angel - Just being Angel. Also he's in shock still from the change to W&H

Wesly - After his big change to slightly sullen dude he seems the most stable so far.

Gunn - Felt he had something to prove. I ddin't think so He fought the good fight despite having abilities. Sort of like a Zander without the wisdom or as much humor.

Lorne - I like Lorne in small doses thought he was over used last season and didn't really want him as a main player but he has his uses. Actually think he will be a Cordy replacement more so than Harmony. He tends to be very honest and out spoken.

Fred - Fred I don't know about. I did like the outburst at the lab and I think this will go places as well.

Spike - Knew the over advertised him for his 20 second appearance. I think we'll see a spike sort of like when he had the Chip in Buffy. Sort of making side comments and not doing much for a while. I think he'll be a little bitter considering he died (a second time) but isn't dead really and is ineffectual as the thing he is (trying to avoid spoilers) An ineffectual spike is an angry spike. He'll say stuff to be mean. Just casue yu have a soul doesn't make you non-evil just look at W&H clients to see that.

Overall - I think we are all suppose to be confused upset and shaken. Joss is trying to convey how the characters feel in a way. Not always the right emotions for a TV show but I think Joss can pull it off. He's not perfect but he is a Darn sight better than most people who write TV today. I think he is less condescending in his Drama then most shows. I think Angel is gonna require some faith for the first 3-4 shows until the characters get their feet and we do as well.

Just what I think

Yeap. Joss wrote and directed the premeire which is something he hasn't done on Angel since Season One. Altho with him directing the Firefly movie we may not see too much more from him when that gets fully underway.
Sadly true. Isn't it scheduled to go into production next Spring? If so, Joss may have a chance to do a lot of episodes of Angel before then. I don't really know how movie schedules work, though, so I may be way off.

At any rate, I'll enjoy his episodes while they last, and I sure won't begrudge him working on the Firefly movie, as that show may be my favorite Joss work.

I'm not too positive on when the actual production will start but if it is the spring then that means he'll have to get the script done and all the pre-production stuff (which typically takes months by my limited knowledge) which will most likely eat up the bulk of his time. There are only 6 short months before the spring and he has to worry about producing Angel and a motion picture where he has never had this much control before.

I hope we do get at least one more Angel ep written/directed by Joss, either way. Maybe a sweeps ep or a finale. He is has one helluva an eye for entertainment. :)

I'm just going to keep watching until I feel it starts to suck...And so far while it wasn't a typical angel type feel ep, it STILL fun. (And yes I loved the phone problems! ;) )

Wesley hand-picked her. I doubt she was an assistant to the CEO beforehand.

Just wanted to say good call. I bet you that's exactly how they're gonna use him.

Actually I've figured just WHY Wes picked her. She's a secretary. And thus is closer to the "main" work force. Sure she's evil, but she's predictable. I'm willing to bet she's the unknowing mole for the season.

There were a lot of good quotes in the show, but I think the one that takes the cake is right in the beginning - "How sweet! And a bit condecending...." Ah how I love thee Wesley.

Nope, best quote goes to the lwayer at the beginning getting the woman Angel rescued to sign the papers who snuck in "everlasting soul" without anyone noticing.

It's amazing how much better this show is without the character I will not name around.

I actually watched my first episode of Angel the other night and it happened to be this one (the season opener).

I liked it! :)

That surprised me because half the time I didn't know who anyone was or what the hell was going on. Fortunately my friends (who are all big Buffy & Angel fans) were able to fill me in on the important backstory details during commercial breaks. I never liked Buffy because of its bad acting and poor fight scenes but I liked what I saw in Angel. the actors are charismatic and fun to watch. The big fight at the end was actually well done and very enjoyable (although I thought the 'SWAT' team rather dumb for just trying to shoot Angel - he's a freaking vampire guys! You use the holy water first not as a last resort!).

So all in all I am going to try to catch this on a regular basis. Who knows, maybe I'll be another Angel fan! ;)

Glad you enjoyed it! re: the fight scene, the SWAT team wasn't as dumb as all that. Bullets won't kill a vampire, but they WILL slow a vampire way down, enough that you can splash the holy water on.

Remember that the SWAT team was armed for children and teachers, not for vampires. Presumably when they go fang-hunting, they bring special automatic stake-firing guns, holy-water supersoakers, and the like. The holy water they brought on this trip was surely just contingency holy-water: it was in a bottle not exactly designed for easy access in the middle of a fight.

If the SWAT team made a mistake, it was in not keeping up an alternating cover fire over the room: they shouldn't have given Angel any free time to stand up in. It was still a very cool fight.
