[Spoilers] Birds of Prey

Usually I am a pretty harsh critic, but I thought the episode showed promise. Of course, I was doing housework while watching, which means that I probably missed a lot of stuff that would have bothered me if I'd been paying attention. It also means that I didnt come into the show with a lot of expectations; I turned on the TV to see what was on and found Birds of Prey to be the best thing on at the time. It didnt grab me enough to make me sit down and watch it, but it didnt annoy the half of my brain that was tuned in. So, a solid, "Um. Its OK!" from me. ;-)

some of the extra special effects elements seemed to detract from the show rather than adding to it.
they did the city well, i thought...
The Huntress cat's-eye thing and the growl seemed more cheesy to me than cool.
yes. mega-cheesy? uber-cheesy? meta-cheesy!

and why did they make her a 'meta-human'? they couldn't just say, "my mommy taught me how to kick butt" ?

well, the second ep, in my opinion, sucked royally.

* again with the narrative voiceover (though they did it for the first few eps of Buffy, so I'll let it slide for now)
* again, why "New Gotham"?
* looks like they're stealing villains from Marvel now (to my knowledge the only water-body villain in mainstream comics is Hydro-Man, a Spider-Man foe).
* gah, so... many... cityscape... zooms...
* Amazing how Helena Wayne the Bartender & the vigilante known as Huntress dress exactly the same...
* y'know, stopping by Wayne Manor, going down to the BatCave, and taking one of Mr. Freeze's freeze guns that Batsy's confiscated would have been a really good idea...
* took Dinah 42 minutes into the show to actually do something...
* Helena's pretty good with the flamethrower -- didn't even scald Reece as she blasted "Slick" Waters off of him.
*bangs head on keyboard as Helena re-enters Harleen's office*

I did like that all three Robins were mentioned, though, and I liked Barbara's "No use of superpowers to settle domestic disputes!" line.

that one made me cringe - she's following a fine tradition, yes, but didn't Jason Todd get murdered by the Joker?

(i could be mistaken on this one...) doesn't a fire extinguisher use chemicals to put fires? not cold?

'New Gotham' could be a liscensing-thing

Jason Todd

Yes in mainline DC continuity he did die.. but this is BOP continuity.. so nothing can be assumed..

New Gotham may be a result of any of a number of Comic storylines.. there were plagues and a huge earthquake that almost destroyed the city in the comics.. however I agree with Mr. Fidget, most likely has to do with licensing the name Gotham.. either because that;s one of the names for New York, or because the movie license is held by a different production house.

Who knows.. they call it Gotham in Smallville. It may be a future flashback during a sweeps period.

I saw the original pilot, with Sherylnn Fenn as Harley, they did make a number of changes besides replacing Harley. The Voiceover was not there, the whole cats eye was used when Helena entered the dark apartment.. with the reedit they make it appear she changes when she 'activates' her powers..

Also they have released a press release saying Dinah's mother will guest star as Black Canary later on.. except they pretty much eliminated that possibility in the pilot.. hell they aren;t even following thier own continuity.. sounds like Enterprise..

Hey now, at least Enterprise was up front with their excuse. "We started the show with time travel, we have made it clear the time stream is changed. Continuity is intentionally altered. Otherwise, every race would have to look like goofy humans in lots of bad makeup."

Episode 3

* Blüdhaven reference was nice, so was Opal City (home of the first Starman, Theodore "Ted" Henry Knght, and the seventh Starman, Jack Knight, and the villains known as The Shade and The Mist). Blüdhaven is where Nightwing (the first Robin) patrols, by the way.
* No Man's Land was nice, to (it was the title of a fairly big story-arc in the Bat-comics).
* The Metahuman-Hater who could copy a Metahuman's own powers and kill them with it was interesting.
* Why do they keep saying Helena's "Half-Metahuman"? You either are or you aren't, you either have superhuman powers or you don't!!!
* Batman's a COMPLETE MYTH?! WHAT THE HELL?!?!?!
* Y'know, I don't think Metahumans in DC Comics were ever viewed as poorly as the Mutants are in Marvel.
* Ending was predictable, but quite good.
* Metahuman/Racial thing was a bit overboard at the end, but...

Overall, a better episode than last week's, so I'm more willing to give the show a chance.

I've been watching it too. I think the idea is that Batman was a generation ago and he hasn't been seen in New Gotham in seven years (at least according to the script). I imagine they will have to visit why Batman left...which should provide for some interesting episodes.

They seem to be following the Buffy format of the one-time bad guy with the mix in for the overall story arc (that psycho psychiatrist). It looks like they focus more on the main arc in next week's episode.

I really hope the acting improves and Dinah learns to do...well something.

If huntress is 1/2 meta-human as they keep repeating that brings up an interesting aspect to the meta-humans. If she is 1/2 then the others are 100%, and that means that they had to have both parents be meta-humans. Where did all of these pure meta-humans come from and if they are having pure meta-human children then the meta-humans would have had to have been around quite awhile to begin with.

With the sheer numbers there seem to be 3 options:
1. Meta-humans are another species that has been on earth for a very long time (as devils and deamons from Buffy/Angel).
2. There was some mass mutation event (possibly a kryptonian meteor shower, the timing would be about right for a second generation to be born)
3. Meta-humans are normal evolutionary event (like in Marvel), with more popping up lately and older ones reproducing.

Option 1 answers the 1/2 metahhuman question as these are seperate species but has never been Cannon in DC.
Options 2&3 seem more likely for the DC universe but do not allow for 1/2 Metahumans. In these instances as Hand of Vecna pointed out either your genes are mutated or not, there is no halfway. If you are going to talk about having 1 normal parent making you 50% then I guess if you are 1st generation mutant with 2 human parents you would be considered 100% human.
