when did it become necessary to have anything you want to be exotic have an unpronouncable name? and one that noone can remember how to spell? sviferblibin?(or something?)

real exotic things of old seem to be rather easy..

ziggurat of ur (ur, exotic, but easy to remember)
angkor wat (way weird, but i can remember it)
Oz
babylon
babel
odin
sphinx
pict

how about a movement to a simpler phonetic weirdness?

half in humor, half in rant....

Heh!

That reminds me. For the past year I've wanted to see if I could somehow con somebody into making an "official" WotC drow character named A'pos'tro'fee. So far, no one is buying.

alsih20 - nice new sig. ;)

And I'm all for exotic sounds you can pronounce - we assume do we not that most humanoids make the same basic sounds as other humanoids - reptile people excluded - so why should their words have no vowels in them?

hey, thanks wicht!

i personally think tsmdm or woman would make a gfreat d20, instead of stats you get a budget and a list of crippling injuries...anybody got a wicked cool translation for that?

If you want exotic try Xhosa, "a language that includes pops, clicks, lip smacks and other sounds unique to the indigenous languages of Southern Africa." One might include hand gestures or other body language into the spoken language as well. (A bit like smilies, I suppose).

NPC: "Welcome stangers. Welcome to the wondrous city of *buuurp*town!"

Adventurers: "Eh..."

Eh, before you start saying that real world names don't sound like that, take a look at nordic or gaelic (Two sources that DnD draws upon) sometime.

Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn.

The use of unpronouncable names to increase the "differentness" of alien beings started a long time ago...

"Dear Cthulhu: having a wonderful time in R'lyeh, wish you were here."

Unfortunately this was mistranslated by some doddering Arkham professor, and the rest is history.
