yeah...Trekkies are an odd bunch sometimes.
ITS BEEN A LONG ROAD GETTING FROM HERE TO THEREOh man, that awful Enterprise theme song...
Agree, they kind of had to. I only saw Nemesis recently and it really impressed me with how thoroughly bad it was. I'd been shocked that Insurrection was actually kind of okay in a "long TNG episode" sort of way (I'd also avoided that), but goddamn, Nemesis was... so much worse than anticipated.I have mixed feelings over Picard, I like Disco but respect its experimental nature isn't for everyone, but there are reasons that it had to be a soft reboot after Nemesis and Enterprise stopped the franchise cold.
Yes, the openings were always classy and dispensed of lyric driven themes in ST series. Enterprise is even worse than you describe as pop rock. Its what Americans might call "patriot rock" in the tradition of Lee Greenwood's "Proud to be an American". For sure a style meant for parody from its very inception. I couldnt believe my ears...ITS BEEN A LONG ROAD GETTING FROM HERE TO THERE
ITS BEEN A - Nope! No more of that!
That was honestly one of the most "What the eff?!?!" moments of my televisual life, hearing that horrific theme song. It was funny because I'd predicted almost everything about Enterprise (right down to details of the visual design/uniforms) before it was even announced, but I sure as hell didn't predict a godawful pop-country song as the theme song! I mean, they say it's "pop rock", and maybe when Rod Stewart did it, it was, but this was countrified as hell.
So bad. Star Trek had had so many amazing intros, and this one was just trite as hell, with music that was beyond trite and well into the realms of "offensively saccharine" (I read it's originally from Patch Adams, so no surprise).
The only thing I will give that intro credit for is that with the Age of Sail bits, they first show a Polynesian boat (with European maps but still), and then when they show a European boat, it's the the HMS Enterprize - unsurprising but amazingly they managed to dodge the bullet of including that horrific monster* Columbus or similar, when 2004 was early enough that lots of people pretended he was "just an explorer". Though it's British Royal Navy so still not great lol. But so much less bad than it could have been. Its what Americans might call "patriot rock" in the tradition of Lee Greenwood's "Proud to be an American".
Yeap, its all that that made me just imagine the theme as "American patriot rock"However they then destroy that goodwill immediately by solely showing US planes and rockets (even the submarine!) for the entire 20th century section. Who is Yuri Gagarin? What is Sputnik? Chopped liver? Even the 20th century calculations and plans are all American, which is hilariously misleading re: the US space program. This is deeply retrograde stuff for a show that put a Russian on the bridge of the Enterprise in like, 1963!

It's an American show. I'm sure all the Russian sci-fi shows give a very even-handed overview of the history of space exploration. However they then destroy that goodwill immediately by solely showing US planes and rockets (even the submarine!) for the entire 20th century section.
