I doubt the original edition will be on the DVDs. George Lucas is determined not give the fans what they really want.

You mean like how he wasn't going to release any of the SW movies on DVD until after he finished Episode 3?

Personally, that would be a TERRIBLE business and marketing move. Unlike some of us (myself included), there are Purists here that want nothing to do with the Special Edition. It would be a waste of their pocket change and a few extra gum wrapper to buy a product in which one disc will never be used.

I've never touched the SE of E.T, but I bought the DVD package nonetheless just so I could get the original. Many, MANY more people would be happy to do this for SW as well.

Weird.

I still think that the OT will make it on to DVD (or whatever format is popular at the time) eventually. It may be after Lucas dies and his estate decides to make a little more money, but as long as it happens that is fine by me.

I don't know. I've never heard of any E.T. purist community. I only know of Star Wars and Tolkien purists.
