Star Wars Saga Edition [SECR] Preview #1 is Up

I actually love the Saves as defenses myself. It fixes a...problem I was aware of. Allow me to explain:

I was designing an alternative magic system for d20 (primarily Iron Heroes). I wanted to require a caster check to cast spells. The problem is that requiring a caster check caused a double roll problem: Roll to cast, Roll to Save. That stinks.

By fixing the Saving Throws as Condition Defenses, you create something very interesting. The caster has to overcome his target's Will Defense, or Reflex Defense, or Fortitude Defense.
An utterly elegant solution to the double-roll problem faced by any using skill-based powers; for example, some(Jedi)one using the Use Force skill.

While I'm hesitant to embrace the system until I've seen more, I'm sufficiently intrigued that I almost pre-ordered a copy upon reading the article. Then my cynicism cut in.

Another thing that really interested me were the 'always take 10' on Climb and the 'reroll Intimidate' on Persuasion. Indicative of simple, elegant benefits rather than numerical bonuses, perhaps? If so, that goes a long way toward explaining the 'smooth high level combat' line.

I've often felt that with a decent advancement system, the gameplay from D&D Minis or SW Minis would make an excellent combat engine for a rules-lite but still varied and tactical RPG - targeting, say, the Savage Worlds niche but with WotC licenses and clout. This seems to be moving partway in that direction, which I very much like.

Much of what I liked has been covered so far. I'm eagerly awaiting this book. From everything I've seen so far it looks like SW Saga Edition may get several rules ported over to other D20 games. The talk of future releases makes me very happy as I thought the line was pretty much dead. Hopefully, this edition will see a lot of support.

Oh yeah, I really loved that alien species aren't going to take much conversion if any to play in the new edition. That's awesome news since Star Wars isn't Star Wars without a lot of aliens running about! :D

I thought Star Wars isn't Star Wars without a lot of weapon-installed starships flying about.
