Stargate Atlantis 6.1.07 "Sunday" - SPOILERS!

Was there a point in killing off Carson?

Here's some food for speculatory thought:

1) Beckett's character (IIRC, "Paul McGillan" is the actor) was NOT in the opening title sequence for season 1.

2) Season 2 (like Stargate SG-1 that same year.....2005?), for whatever the reason, didn't have an opening title sequence.

3) All of a sudden, Paul McGillan IS in the opening title sequence for season 3.

4) Beckett's character is killed off last week. Lo and behold! Even though he's dead, he was in the opening title sequence for last night's episode. Why? Because of a "previoulsy on Stargate Atlantis" moment at the very beginning?

Remember, this is all speculation. But if an actor ISN'T in the opening titles for the show's first season, then all of a sudden IS in those titles in subsequent seasons, then gets his character killed off, one might jump to the conclusion that either the actor or his agent were too much of a pain in the ass to work with.

I mean, putting Beckett's character in the opening titles while NOT doing the same for Sulenka's (sp?) character really made the matter stand out. Didn't season 1 have an equal amount of time/lines given to either of the respective characters?

I call "Shenanigans!" ..........even if I can't spell it!

The reason given in interviews and other articles I've read is that Beckett was a sideline character (like Zelenka) in season 1. He just turned out to be so popular they made him a main character (which, by nature, means his name is featured the entire season in the credits). Even if the character is not in the episode (or dead), as long as they signed a contract as a lead role in the series, they're in the credits that whole season.
