I did not realize that Jewel Staite was already signed on to do this. I was making a joke about the prevalence to hire out-of-work cancelled-sci-fi show talent to fill in the ranks of SG* shows. Not that she is a bad choice as an actor, of course.

The shows might have been cancelled, but I think each actor proved his qualities in these shows, and they also showed that they can work in the genre.

But I wonder how much it is also the actors wanting to play in a Sci-Fi show again?

Was there a point in killing off Carson? Did the show need to reduce payroll? If so is the doctor replacement a less expensive payroll expense?

It seems baffling to me you would make the determination to kill a character, then cave to pressure to bring him back.

My guess would be that the actor wanted to move on, and asked to be written out of the show.

Just thinking - Stargate: SG1 also killed off their doctor, too.

Jewel was actually in a couple of episodes of SG:Atlantis previously, but as a half-wraith looking chick with heavy monster make-up so you didn't neccessarily recognize her. Maybe the crew just really like working with her and invited her back.

I just wish they had taken out McKay, for that is what the show is turning into, there are other and better characters on it, SG-1 has a better balance with cast, Atlantis needs to do something to kick the show up.

It was a money thing. They are bring Amanda Tapping in next year and she costs a lot. They are also putting Weir onto a recurring status.

It was also a ratings thing they hope to boost rating by pulling in Firefly fans who amy not be watching.

I have not seen any indication that it was a money thing. Do you have any references?

My understanding is that Amanda Tapping had a pre-existing contract for next year, and since SG-1 was ending, it was within the bounds of that contract to move her over to Atlantis.
