Starting equipment value

I'm a little confused about starting treasure. on DMG page 145, table 5-1 lists amounts. That is the total they should have at that level, not the total they should find at that level, correct? Therefore a 20th level character should have 760,000 go wroth of equipment, or should they have 760,000 plus all the previous levels (which seems like a lot). Now facter into this epic. Say for a 28th level character. If we take my interpretation of a 20th level character at 760,000 gp. Now we look at table 3-10 on page 122 of the ELH. I interpret that table as what they should find each level. if we extrapolate both tables I gather that a 28th level character should have 1,759,000 gp worth of equpment. Am I correct or monumentally confused?

The table is guidelines for charaters made at that level. So, if you make a character of X level, they suggest you give them so much gp in equipment.

These are actually character converted over from 2nd edition, and we are bumping some of them up in level so they are all roughly equal. the numbers don't need to be exact, I just need to get a feel for the power of the equipment they should have.

That's what the numbers are there for then. Just look at the converted PCs level and they should have about that much gp value in equipment.

At what level? This would be everything a character would accumulate between 1st and 24th levels, by my count.

A 'typical' 28th level character will have a net worth of 3.3 million gp.

Maybe my original question was not clear, or I am jsut not understanding the answers. Per the DMG pg 145, should a 20th level character currently have in their possesion 760,000 gp worth of wealth, or should they aquire 760,000 while they are 20th level. By my count, if they have 760,00 pg, then get 87,000 at 21, 96,000 at 22, 106,000 at 23, 116,000 at 24, 128,000 at 25, 141,000 at 26, 155,000 at 27, and 170,000 at 28th then they should have 1,759,000 gp in wealth, or am I still doing something wrong?

The number is how much they should own in total.

The entries on the chart in question are NOT cummulative, if that's what you are asking. A 20th level character has 760,000gp worth of equipment. The epic level handbook has a similar chart for character levels beyond 20. It is on page 23. The chart on page 122 is for determining the treasure that an epic level monster or NPC would possess. According to the correct chart on page 23, a 28th level player character has 3.3 million gp worth of assets.
