Stat-tastic?

stats

the stats are just abouve adverage (8,8,10,11,12,17)so pay no attention to the powergamers whinning. put the 17 in Str, 12 Dex
11 Con (bump it at level 4) 10 Int 8 Wis, 8 cha (you wont be a spellcaster without an item to boost your wisdom but by 5th level you probable can afford it so who cares.) you will want to have the cleric boost you up and also perhaps the mage (str, dex, con)
but you should do ok. if your DM allows it play an Aasmar (celestial before you add the template. this will raise your Cha and Wis to 10 and its only an EL1 character)

8,8,10,11,12,17

8 = +0 * 2
10 = +2
11 = +3
12 = +4
17 = +13

Grand total of 0 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 13 = 9 + 13 = 22 on the point buy system which lists 24 as an average character. I use a 32 point buy system, does that really make me a power gamer? This character is overall weak, though with the half-dragon template he'll be a little evened out.

You didn't tell us what you're race is so I'll calculate the point buy as if you had no racial modifiers: 11, 10, 11, 15, 7, 13
7 = 0
11 = +3 * 2
10 = +2
13 = +5
15 = +7
0 + 6 + 2 + 5 + 7 = 11 + 9 = 20, even worse by taking totals but at least this buy is balanced he has one weak sopt, one place that is going to give him a -.

Where as the other set has two 8s that's two places with a - and only 2 stats with a +.

Okay, as an elf half dragon you'll get +8 str, +2 Dex, +2 Int, +2 Cha.

So, I'd place an 8 in strngth, a 16 Strength is pretty darn good. Now the other 8 could go into Int or Cha, to help it out. Placing it in Wisdom would get rid of the spells if you are going to be a ranger. But the 17 there would allow you some good spell abilities and help out with the spot and listen checks. So, let's go with

Str 8+8 =16
Dex 12+2=14
Con 11
Int 10+2= 12
Wis 17
Cha 8+2= 10

weak character

which is why I suggested the Aasamir. that way his rolls would be
17 str 12 dex 11 con 10 int, 10 wis, and 10 cha, with spellcasting protogee his effictive wis would raise to 12 allowing level 1 and 2 spels and a bonus lev 1 spell. that would give him the following:
17 +3
12 +1
11 +0
10+0
10+0
12+1
-------
total +5 definatly a playable character and does not even take into account the bonuses for adding the 1/2 dragon template.
this is a far cry from the 8,8,10,11,12,17 that he rolled. yes in his case a point buy would have come out better. but since he rolled he stuck with what he got. and with what he got this character can still shine and be fun to play

Based on +8 str, +2 Dex, +2 Int, +2 Cha racial bonuses and shooting for the ranger class, how about this?

str: 10 + 8 = 18
dex: 17 + 2 = 19
con: 11
int: 8 + 2 = 10
wis: 12
cha: 8 + 2 = 10

That gives you maximum benefit from a chain shirt and also gives you perfect stats for archery and stealth.

Work on boosting your constitution a bit. Eventually you want to get your wisdom up as well but you don't even get 3rd level spells until 11th level so it's probably not super urgent...

the point is although he had some low stats he was playable

Well, that's debatable. He had at least one artifact-level item (Staff of Magius), and gained an epic-level wizard's help when he needed it. He was pretty weak on his own. Sure, he survived the War of the Lance, but he was still a little fish at that point. He really only got insanely powerful after he took over the Tower of High Sorcery and got access to hundreds of spellbooks and more magic items. Anyways, I'd say that he got some DM's favor and then it spiralled out of control :)
