Sticky Fighter question

This 'problem' wouldn't have existed in 3.5 because cover negates the opportunity attack. Surprisingly, that's no longer the case. The other thing is that those monsters can keep moving if they have another move action remaining.

That wouldn't necessarily help here. When the monster is directly in front of the Fighter, he no longer has cover, and thus leaving that square would prevent an OA. Put another ally across from the Fighter into a flanking position and the monsters HAVE to come through the square directly in front of the Fighter. Note: This would also provide two OA's per monster...another reason why it's not good to just charge into a room. :D

Alternatively, you could do as suggested elsewhere and just place directly in front of the door. This would also negate cover and force the monsters into having to leave the square directly in front of the Fighter to move into the room.

Basically though, the thing to understand there here is that this scenario is very unlikely. Unless the Fighter is getting some INSANE bonuses, he'll eventually miss and a monster will get through. Or they can burn their standard on another move action or a charge. Lastly, even if you had two Fighters to take down both move actions or something, it's obviously suicidal for the DM to just keep shoving enemies into the grinder. He would be smart to just pull his forces back and wait the PC's out, or use some sort of AoE effect from a safe distance down the hall.

Not to say that Fighters shouldn't be able to hold a door...just that this is a very specific scenario with very specific corridor widths and a lot of assumptions about how the monsters are going to react. Real gameplay will not necessarily follow what's happening here. Heck, the DM can just decide that there's a secret door in the back of the room (he's the DM, it's not like you'd know the difference if he just pulled it out of thin air) and start sending enemies through it. This would be a nasty trick to play, especially since the Defenders will be on the other side of the room by the main door!

But, that's a square in the room, and if the monsters give up a second move action (or a minor and a move for kobolds), they could then shift further and fill up the squares around 'b'.

Regardless, though, the monsters still get another move action after the OA, so can then move into the room (one OA per opponent) if still alive.
